Meet Zeeshan Khan

We were lucky to catch up with Zeeshan Khan recently and have shared our conversation below.

Zeeshan , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism is rooted in my journey from the bustling tech-centric city of Bangalore, India, to the heart of Hollywood, chasing my dreams against the grain. Growing up in the Silicon Valley of India, the odds of a young boy like me dreaming of a film career seemed remote. In a city of 11 million, where engineers are a dime a dozen, my vision was unconventional, especially in the eyes of my family who hoped for a more traditional career path for me.

My fascination with filmmaking began with an off-limits film camera my father brought home. Though I couldn’t touch it, the allure of capturing moments permanently was irresistible. While my family’s reluctance led me to initially pursue a degree in Commerce, my heart was never truly in it. Fate, however, had other plans. A college photography competition reignited my passion, and investing in my first Nikon D5200 camera set the stage for my future endeavors.

From sharing my work on ‘Zeislab’ to exploring the world of wedding videography, I realized that while my passion was alive, I was still far from my ultimate goal of becoming a cinematographer. It took courage to approach my parents, expressing my genuine desire to study cinematography. To my gratitude, they eventually saw my dedication and supported my decision to move to Los Angeles.

In Hollywood, my growth trajectory has been remarkable. From working on Jerimiah Spencer’s documentary to shooting music videos like Prince Hadj’s ‘Ain’t Sorry’ which garnered immense attention, my dreams are unfolding. I’m humbled and optimistic, eager to create and explore cinematography with each passing day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Certainly! I am a Director of Photography (DoP) — the visual storyteller behind the scenes of many films you might’ve seen. My role, in essence, is to translate the director’s vision into a visual symphony, harmonizing elements like lighting, camera movement, and composition to create cinematic art. Every frame is a canvas, and as a DoP, I paint with light and shadows.
What excites me the most about being a DoP? It’s the challenge of capturing emotions, atmospheres, and narratives, all through the lens of a camera. It’s an intricate dance between technology and art, precision and intuition, planning and spontaneity. Each project presents its unique set of challenges and opportunities, and the joy of overcoming those to produce something visually striking is indescribable.
Speaking of projects, let me share a bit about my latest venture, ‘Nightingale.’ An action-packed short movie, ‘Nightingale’ was an adrenaline-filled ride from start to finish. Set in a world of intrigue and danger, every scene was designed to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. The production itself was intense. We dealt with a plethora of challenges, from managing intricate action sequences to ensuring the safety of our cast and crew. Lighting was another challenge — capturing the essence of ‘night’ while ensuring clarity and mood was a delicate balance to strike.
However, these challenges made the experience even more rewarding. The teamwork, the passion, and the dedication of everyone involved were exemplary. And the result? A film that not only thrills but also showcases the art of cinema in its full glory.
Outside of my professional life, I am an avid traveler, Automotive, Music and nature enthusiast. The world, with its diverse landscapes and cultures, serves as a continuous source of inspiration. Every location, be it a bustling city or a serene countryside, tells its own story — and I aim to capture that in my work.
Thank you for allowing me to share a piece of my journey. Whether you’re a film aficionado or someone just looking for a good story, I invite you to dive into the world of ‘Nightingale’ and experience the magic of cinema through my eyes.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey as a Director of Photography, there are indeed distinct qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that stand out as pivotal:

Visual Storytelling & Composition: The foundation of a DoP’s job is to narrate a story visually. Understanding the principles of composition, the rule of thirds, leading lines, and how to direct a viewer’s attention within a frame became paramount.
Advice: Constantly study films, art, and photographs. Look for patterns, for how emotion is conveyed visually. Try replicating shots or scenes that resonate with you. Over time, develop your own style and approach to framing.

Technical Mastery: Being adept at handling various cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment is essential. Grasping the intricacies of exposure, color grading, and post-production workflows has given me an edge in achieving my envisioned results.
Advice: Dive deep into the technical aspects. Take courses, attend workshops, and get hands-on with as much equipment as possible. Stay updated with the latest technologies. The more tools you’re familiar with, the better equipped you’ll be to bring a vision to life, no matter the constraints.

Interpersonal Skills & Collaboration: Filmmaking is a collective effort. The ability to communicate your vision, to listen to others, and to work harmoniously with a team – directors, actors, crew members – is crucial.
Advice: Foster relationships both on and off set. Learn the art of communication. Understand that every person on a set brings a unique perspective, and their inputs can enrich the final product. Be open, be patient, and remember that collaboration often leads to the best results.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The “American Cinematographer Manual” (often referred to as the filmmaker’s “bible”) has been an indispensable tool throughout my journey as a Director of Photography. The wealth of knowledge compiled in this manual has provided guidance, cleared doubts, and broadened my understanding of the craft in numerous ways.

it played an integral role in my skill development the manual is a comprehensive repository of technical information, from film stock characteristics to the nitty-gritty of digital sensors. It helped bridge my theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring that I could achieve the desired effects on screen with precision.
the manual lays the groundwork for understanding basic principles of cinematography. It served as a go-to reference for fundamental concepts, ensuring that I always had a solid foundation to build upon.
On set, unexpected challenges can arise. The manual, with its extensive range of topics, often offered solutions or at least pointed me in the right direction.

A few impactful nuggets of wisdom that I’ve gathered over time include:

Understanding Light: One of the most valuable lessons from the manual is the comprehensive breakdown of lighting—its qualities, its behavior, and its impact on film and digital sensors. The detailed discussions on hard vs. soft light, light ratios, and the color temperature of different light sources have been instrumental.
Exposure Fundamentals: The manual’s deep dive into exposure, especially the intricate nuances of how different film stocks react to light, was enlightening. Even in the digital age, understanding the foundational principles of exposure is paramount.
Camera Movement and Lenses: The manual provides insights into choosing the right lens for the right moment and the effects of different camera movements. These decisions play a pivotal role in storytelling and can dramatically alter the mood or message of a scene.

For anyone passionate about cinematography, the “American Cinematographer Manual” is more than just a book—it’s a mentor, a guide, and a trusted companion. I often revisit its pages, constantly discovering new insights or revisiting foundational principles. The world of cinematography is vast, and this manual ensures that I’m always grounded in the essentials while reaching for new creative heights.
