Latia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Finding one’s purpose is a deeply personal and often evolving journey. It involves self-reflection, exploration, and sometimes, trial and error. For me, discovering my purpose was a gradual process that came from a combination of introspection, life experiences, and learning about the world around me.
I started by reflecting on my interests, passions, and values. I asked myself what activities made me feel truly alive and fulfilled. I explored different hobbies, read extensively, and engaged in conversations with people from diverse backgrounds. This exposure helped me broaden my perspective and understand various life paths and purposes.
I also paid attention to the things that bothered me deeply, the issues in the world that I wanted to change. Understanding my concerns for the world and envisioning a positive change helped me define a sense of purpose tied to making a difference, even in small ways.
Additionally, I found that helping others and making meaningful connections with people brought me immense joy and fulfillment. Acts of kindness and empathy not only made a difference in others’ lives but also gave my own life a profound sense of purpose and meaning.
Over time, I realized that my purpose was not a single grand revelation but a series of small, meaningful discoveries about myself and the world. It’s an ongoing journey, and my understanding of my purpose continues to evolve as I grow, learn, and experience new things. Embracing this dynamic aspect of purpose has allowed me to remain open to new opportunities and challenges, always seeking ways to contribute positively to the world and find fulfillment in what I do.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As an accountant, my role revolves around managing financial records, preparing and analyzing financial reports, preparing tax returns, and ensuring that businesses comply with relevant regulations and laws. I work closely with clients or within organizations to provide financial insights, support decision-making, and optimize financial processes.
What makes this profession particularly exciting and special lies in the opportunity to play a crucial role in the financial health of businesses. It’s hard to narrow down to one specific thing (lol), but I would say the top two things that make this profession exciting is being able to have an impact on business success and continuous learning. Accountants are key players in a company’s success. By providing accurate financial information and strategic advice, I contribute directly to important business decisions. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my work helps businesses thrive and grow. In addition, the field of accounting is constantly evolving due to changes in regulations, technology, and business practices. This means there’s always something new to learn. Staying updated with the latest tax laws, trends, and tools keeps the job fresh and exciting.
One thing that I realized after Covid, was that individuals and businesses started and/or found ways to expand their businesses. However, a lot of individuals and businesses fell behind in paying taxes, and therefore owed the IRS thousands of dollars. I began to get a lot more clients who were extremely overwhelmed because they owed the IRS so much. I heard their frustrations, and since I was a CPA, I wanted to help. Therefore, I implemented tax resolution services into my accounting business. I now help clients who owe the IRS more than $10,000 and represent them to try and reduce their liabilities as low as possible.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge stand out as the most impactful are:
Resilience: The ability to bounce back from failures and setbacks was crucial. In any journey, there are inevitable challenges. Being resilient helped me face these challenges with determination, learn from failures, and keep moving forward. My advice for those starting their journey is to cultivate resilience by reframing failures as opportunities to learn, grow, and improve. Embrace challenges as steppingstones toward your goals, and don’t be afraid to try again after setbacks.
Continuous Learning: The world is constantly changing, and staying relevant requires a commitment to continuous learning. Embracing new skills, technologies, and knowledge not only enhanced my expertise but also opened doors to new opportunities. My advice is to be curious and proactive about learning. Seek out knowledge through books, online courses, mentors, and real-life experiences. Stay open to new ideas and be willing to adapt and evolve with the changing landscape of your field.
Effective Communication: The ability to communicate clearly and confidently, both in writing and verbally, was instrumental in my journey. Whether it was expressing ideas, negotiating deals, or collaborating with others, effective communication facilitated meaningful connections and collaborations. To improve communication skills, practice active listening, seek feedback, and engage in activities that require public speaking or writing, such as joining clubs or writing blogs. Don’t underestimate the power of communication in building relationships and conveying your ideas effectively.
My overarching advice for those early in their journey is to embrace a growth mindset. Believe in your ability to develop and improve your skills and qualities through dedication and hard work. Be proactive in seeking opportunities for growth, whether it’s through formal education, mentorship, or hands-on experiences. Surround yourself with positive influences and supportive mentors who can guide you along the way. Remember that every experience, whether successful or challenging, is a chance to learn and grow. Stay persistent, stay curious, and believe in your potential to achieve your goals.
