We were lucky to catch up with David Emenheiser recently and have shared our conversation below.
David , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I always say I didn’t find photography, photography found me. At a point in my life when I was seriously broken , God brought me photography. For 20 years I struggled with drug addiction. For so long I was a burden to society , I was a burden to my family , I had no goals , no dreams and no purpose in this world. But when I decided to change my life almost 10 years ago I would just go on these long drives and take photos with my phone. My wife said to me one day you should get a camera , and from that moment David Joseph Photo was born … God has turned what was meant as a therapy for me early in my recovery to so much more than that
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My Name is David Joseph Emenheiser and I’m a Photographer from Southern California. I started my business just as a landscape photographer but as my skills and eye expanded I’ve gotten my feet in many different styles of photography. From weddings to portraits , aviation and events. Currently I do a lot of event photography with the City of Palmdale and the City of Lancaster which has opened up so many doors for me and my work.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
A huge part of my growth has been through my determination to better my life to finally live out my God given purpose in this world.. The growth and demand for my work has come from how versatile my photography has become and that’s mostly because I’m constantly out shooting and growing in my craft. I tell those who are first starting out to just go out and shoot what you love , everyday if need be. And share on social media consistently. Be your own self promoter and then the right people will start to notice your work .
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
First and Foremost Jesus has been the reason for so much growth in my life and my photography. God has taken a passion and turned it into a purpose and has opened so many doors for me in my life. Second my Wife Darlene has been my biggest inspiration and my biggest fan from the start. She has encouraged me and cheered me on every step of the way and without her David Joseph Photo would not exist. She saw something in me that I didn’t and she helped mold the photographer I am today
