We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmine Hunt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmine below.
Jasmine, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome has been my life’s journey and path to becoming the practitioner and educator that I’ve always wanted to be. Growing up as a multiethnic woman of color, I was always searching for inclusive spaces where I could thrive and be the light for others. I experienced many challenges growing up. I had no place to turn to when I experienced identity shaming, bullying, trauma, discrimination, and mental health challenges. I had many self-limiting beliefs growing up because the spaces that I shared with others were unsafe. The message I received was, “You don’t belong” and so that harmful mantra became part of me and my own belief system.
As I grew up, I began to see that things were no different as an adult except for the fact that older people were much more sneaky about throwing shade. After years of internalizing other people’s harmful energy and toxic behaviors, I started to walk away. My body could no longer ignore what my heart and mind was enduring. A friend of mine calls it “radical boundaries”. I began to protect my energy more and more and this is how I began to heal my own limiting beliefs and imposter syndrome. I had to engage in the shadow work, the isolation, in heavy self-reflection, and put several parts of my life on pause before I could walk in my truth.
Imposter Syndrome is real and I continue to work on it to this day. I do all that I can to bring high vibration to the spaces I enter and I never remain stagnant. I challenge myself to take on scary projects as often as possible. I allow myself to dream as delusionally as possible. I don’t wait for opportunities to fall in my lap. I create them when they are nowhere to be found. I chase the edge knowing that I might fail or look silly. I stay aligned with my purpose and that has empowered me and it has strengthened my self-belief and self-confidence ten fold.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In 2017, I became a 200 200-hour registered Yoga Teacher through Summit Climbing, Yoga, and Fitness. I began practicing Yoga over a decade ago and currently work full-time as a Diversity and Wellbeing Specialist and as an independent yoga instructor in Dallas, Texas. I provide yoga sessions for various wellness gatherings, residential areas and communities, or private clients and companies.
In 2018, I designed a course, Maximizing Performance Potential for Law Enforcement, to equip policing professionals with tools to reduce stress and hyper-vigilance. This led me to discover my second career in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion space. I became a Certified Diversity Practitioner in 2021 and a Qualified Administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory. I enjoy sharing my knowledge on yoga, mindfulness, employee wellbeing, and inclusion.
In 2021, I formalized my business, LIFE ON A MAT after launching my yoga and wellness blog five years prior.
I have worked with hundreds of clients including student-athletes, youth, geriatric patients, first responders, organizational leaders, and employee communities. At the moment, I am focused on developing workshops and offerings to meet the needs of underserved and marginalized groups as well as organizations, non-profits, and corporate companies. My work can be further explored at lifeonamat.com.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My three phrases I live by:
1. Self talk is huge — I remind myself that I am capable and that I belong.
2. Expand your mindset — I am a relentless learner and I create a plan for my growth and development no matter where I go, no matter the company I work for, no matter who’s around me.
3. Environment is everything — go where you grow and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re a quitter or indecisive.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m looking for people leaders, professionals, business owners, lightworkers or changemakers who are searching for a holistic learning experience. As a Black and Asian Yoga Instructor and DEI Practitioner, my yoga sessions and wellness offerings are customized and rooted through the lens of decolonization and racial equity. Employee wellbeing is a business imperative and individual wellbeing is a human imperative. It is integral to how our mind-bodies and communities thrive and reach optimal health.
