We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christopher Gannon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christopher, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I would say most of my resilience comes from my stubbornness. I’m not a big fan of losing or being told I can’t have or do something. My stubbornness is an inherited trait from my father who inherited it from his mother.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Well I come from a working class family with working class values. At age 18 I realized that I couldn’t afford college or my dream so I enlisted in the military for 6 years. Post service I used the education benefit to study at the Lee Strasberg Institute where I immersed myself in the acting craft. I bring a real rawness to what I do because of everything I’ve experienced in my life. It’s never been easy, but I like to think that since life is hard the upsides are greater. I’m currently working on bringing a pilot to market with a really good friend. It’s been some really great work and the message is excellent.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Punctuality is the first quality anyone has to have when pursuing something greater than oneself. If you can master the art of being early, you’ve won 90% of the battle. Next I’d say you have to be likable. The easier you are to be around means more people will learn about how pleasant you are so intern more people will want to work with you. If you’re a jerk, nobody’s gonna want to work with you. Finally, have some humility. Don’t be arrogant or egocentric. Everyone in this world is equal so don’t think you’re better than anyone or treat them as less than. It’s a daily discipline. Everyday I think about it and constantly remind myself how I’d feel if someone treated me poorly so I mitigate it by treating everyone with respect and fairness. It keeps the karmic debt in your favor.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one challenge I’m facing right now is the radical change Hollywood is going through. I’m looking to find a new niche that I can fit into in this new Hollywood. We’re also currently on strike which hasn’t helped at the moment.
