Meet Orinthia Carter Owner of OrinthiaDesign

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Orinthia Carter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Orinthia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
As a child growing up in Jamaica, I was inspired by watching my talented great grandmother design captivating pieces for our family and community. It warmed my heart to see the excitement and joy it brought her clients from her gifts of design. I was drawn to design for the ability to express my unique aesthetic vision, create beautiful clothing, and contribute to the cultural landscape of fashion. As I became older, I created garments that give power to ones higher being. My passion is to create garments that speak to one’s higher self and represent self-confidence. It brings me joy to design garments that give my clients a boost of self-confidence by expressing their personality through design to feel more authentic and empowering.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Doing what you love each day brings a sense of fulfillment, satisfaction, and purpose to your life. It can also lead to greater motivation and productivity in your work, as you are more likely to be passionate and engaged with the tasks at hand. Establishing Orinthia Design, I take pride in my business by creating a custom experience that positively impacts my clients’ lives, contributing to my community, and building a legacy for future generations.

As a fashion designer, it’s important to have a strong sense of adaptability within the ever-changing industry. In the upcoming months, our focus is to expand our product offering with ready to wear garments, enhance customer experience through custom couture fashion shows, and offer hands-on training courses for future designers. We are also offering internships to provide the opportunity for future designers to zone in on their work, so they can become the best! bring a fresh perspective and offer community engagement to support the development of future professionals. I pray that God will be over my business and blessing the future of Orinthia Design.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the most important advices I can offer that I have used to build Orinthia Design is putting God first. I truly believe I am nothing without him. The foundation of having someone to lean on, gives you the strength to keep on moving. I know that he wants nothing but the best for me. Two is communication. I take pride in integrity, honesty, and accountability as a part of the foundation for my business. Designing requires a great deal of creativity and imagination, making it important to be able to effectively communicate your ideas and visions working with team members, suppliers, and clients. It’s equally as important to be able to listen to feedback and collaborate with others to refine your designs.

Also, time management has become one of the most critical factors in my success because it ensures that I will deliver on time to my clients and helps boost productivity by focusing on the most important task to allocate time effectively. My advice for starting a fashion design business is to start small with one product, understand your clients, and create your own identity. ASK GOD TO LEAD THE WAY.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
When I was thirteen my family and I emigrated from the countryside of Jamaica to the big apple New York in pursuit of a better life. My parents taught me to not fear but embrace change and that everyone should feel empowered to pursue their dreams. My parents raised us with the intention of honoring our cultural roots where my mom’s main priority was the importance of being resourceful. Growing up I learned how to sew, make traditional foods, grow herbs from the garden, and take care of the animals on the farm.

Although the transition to American life wasn’t easy, I watched my parents turn their faith into prayers then their prayers into dreams. They worked diligently to provide and I’m forever grateful for the sacrifices they made, they did their best to provide a loving stable home for each of my siblings to grow.
