We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Iman Drummond a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Iman, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Let me start by saying, I am 1 of 1 and I own that. When it comes to being effective & successful when I am showing up as my own representation, can feel like heavy pressure initially. I have been in rooms where I am the only one that looks like me and I take it as a challenge to represent myself well, my family and those look up to me. I have learned to stay on track, come as myself, give myself grace and know that I am here for a reason; it’s my time to shine. This is where the question (which I love to ask others) comes in, “Would you rather be liked or respected?” and for me, I truly rather be respected for who I am, my character and integrity.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I work within HR and specialize in Talent Acquisition, and have held ground in this space for over 10 years. I love my job because I get to be that bridge between a potential candidate and their dream job. Nothing beats the “Hi, so I would love to offer you this position” conversation because you never know how you are blessing someone. Giving someone an opportunity is a game changer! As a Recruiter, I think what sets me apart is my ability to make an interview feel like a conversation between friends. I joke around, find common ground, talk about my love for Chick Fil A, and truly enjoy getting to know people. Is it easy? Not always. But do I love it? Absolutely! I would not trade it.
In addition to working within HR, I am a children’s book author of 2 incredible books: “Carter’s Way: All the Things You Can Be” & “Letter Tracing Carter’s Way”. Dedicated to my nephew whose personality & curiosity is the inspiration behind my books.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back my journey has been hard work yet beautiful. I thrive in a good challenge, enjoy working hard and truly have a passion for recruiting. 3 qualities / skills that impacted me the most include: Flexibility: Be ready for change and embrace it. Networking: Surround yourself with different people, you never know what you will learn. Books: Read, read and read.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am very open to collaborating with others who are authors, interested in business investment opportunities and travel.
