Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicolas Nami. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nicolas, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience is a fusion of personality, upbringing, and life experiences. Both my Sensei and my father taught me that as men responsible for ourselves and those around us, giving up is not an option. This life lesson complements my natural stubbornness—I don’t back down until I either black out or complete the task at hand. Growing up in Martial Arts, I was surrounded by a strong community, many of whom I still connect with today. My Sensei emphasized the importance of relentless practice, reinforcing that a true champion is defined in moments of exhaustion but continues to persevere. Though I don’t fully subscribe to the Chinese zodiac or astrological signs, being born in the Year of the Horse and being a Sagittarius interestingly align with my relentless drive and resilience toward pain and hard work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been in the creative industry for over 30 years, specializing in a range of fields from motion design to animation and filmmaking. Doing what I love isn’t work—it’s both a gift and an opportunity. At Nami Pictures, and through my leadership of DMAOC, we’ve cultivated a community that extends the creative conversation both online and offline. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Versatility: Being skilled in multiple areas, such as motion graphics, sound design, and post-production, opens up more opportunities.
Speed and Efficiency: Utilize tools like AI, plugins, and scripts to do your job faster and better. These tools make life easier and shouldn’t be shunned.
Networking: Building strong relationships within the industry can accelerate your career and bring about unexpected opportunities.
Advice for those just starting out: Before diving into all the tools and networks, get your fundamentals rock-solid. Understand why you design the way you do and always create with a purpose.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron has played an instrumental role in my professional journey. As a creative, it’s crucial to keep the ideas flowing and minimize downtime, and this book provides the tools to achieve just that. It has helped me live the life of an artist who’s constantly up and running creatively.
In addition to The Artist’s Way, I’m a huge fan of Jeffery Gitomer’s works. I own every single one of his books and find them invaluable for business acumen and sales techniques. Another favorite is Pocket Full of Do by Chris Do, which offers actionable advice for creative entrepreneurs. Last but not least, The Win Without Pitching Manifesto by Blair Enns has been a game-changer for how I approach client interactions and pitches. These books combined form a powerhouse of knowledge that every creative professional should delve into.
