We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenny Hoyos. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenny below.
Hi Jenny, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
From a very young age, I faced significant health challenges that tested my spirit and determination. At just four, I started experiencing severe stomach pains and, despite frequent visits to numerous physicians, most believed my symptoms were psychosomatic. However, by the age of 14, after a lengthy journey of seeking answers, I was diagnosed with multiple gastrointestinal conditions. This diagnosis necessitated major dietary modifications which were especially poignant for me given my deep-seated passion for food and cooking.
The restrictive nature of my diet means I’ve had to become my own chef, ensuring every meal I consume is tailored to my specific needs. Dining out isn’t an option for me, and even simple acts like attending social gatherings or traveling present their unique challenges. Wherever I go, I am armed with a portable stove and essential groceries to ensure my dietary needs are met.
While some might perceive this as a limitation, I view it as a blessing in disguise. This experience has instilled in me a profound discipline, resilience, and an appreciation for the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It has taught me to adapt, persevere, and find joy in unexpected places. Moreover, the rigorous habits I’ve cultivated might very well be contributing to a longer and healthier life. I believe challenges shape us, and in my case, they’ve certainly made me stronger.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Tell us about yourself and your professional journey.
Hello, I’m Jenny Hoyos, an 18-year-old content creator with a passion for financial education tailored for the younger generations, specifically Gen Z and Gen Alpha. With over 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, my primary platform, I curate content focusing on all facets of money – from savings and earnings to understanding the broader economic spectrum.
What drives you to create content on finance for the younger audience?
My inspiration stems from introspection. Reflecting on my younger self, I recognize the burning curiosity I had about making money, coupled with the uncertainty of how to proceed. While I always harbored an aspiration for financial freedom and entrepreneurship, the roadmap was blurry. Thus, my content is a nod to that younger Jenny, and to countless others like her, who could benefit from an early introduction to finance and entrepreneurship. I craft each video in an engaging manner to ensure that the message is both informative and captivating for our young minds.
Could you elaborate more about your brand and presence across platforms?
Certainly! While YouTube is my predominant medium, with an audience of over 1.5 million, I also engage with followers on TikTok and Instagram, boasting 100k and 50k followers respectively. Balancing this bustling digital presence is no small feat, especially as I’m a full-time student. I’m currently a senior in college, on track to obtain a bachelor’s degree in finance in 2024.
What other passions drive you, and how do they intersect with your content?
Beyond finance, I’m fervently passionate about self-development. This encompasses areas such as productivity, health, and wellness. My journey, both academic and personal, is a testament to my commitment to long-term goals and forward-thinking. I believe in the synergy of financial acumen and personal growth, and this ethos permeates my content. Through my platform, I aspire to not only educate but also inspire viewers to prioritize their future and embrace a holistic approach to personal development.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Obsession: In today’s fast-paced and highly competitive landscape, the key to standing out is an unrelenting obsession with one’s craft. This isn’t just about being committed; it’s about an insatiable hunger for knowledge, an unyielding desire to refine one’s skills, and an innate drive to always strive for improvement. An obsessive attitude ensures you’re always ahead of the curve, constantly learning, and tirelessly working towards bettering yourself and your work.
2. Passion: Passion is the fuel that drives the engine of success. Without genuine enthusiasm for what you do, it will show in the outcome. When you are genuinely passionate about your pursuits, you naturally invest more time and infuse greater care into them. Your zeal becomes apparent in the quality of your work, and it’s a fact: people are drawn to authenticity. Passion is not just an emotion; it’s a catalyst for outstanding results.
3. Discipline: Success isn’t a product of sporadic bursts of effort but rather the result of consistent, disciplined actions. To make real progress, it’s imperative to cultivate habits that align with your goals. Indeed, there will be times when the journey feels monotonous or when discouragement sets in. However, discipline is the anchor that keeps you steady. Remember, true growth often feels incremental, and it’s about getting 1% better each day. When things seem repetitive or stagnant, that’s often a sign that you’re on the cusp of a breakthrough, and it’s crucial to persevere.
Do you have any advice for individuals early in their journey?
For those just embarking on their journeys, I cannot stress enough the importance of these three pillars. Cultivate an obsession for continuous learning; let genuine passion guide your path, and instill discipline in your daily routines. The road to success is paved with challenges, but with these traits as your guiding lights, you’ll navigate it with grace and determination.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Which book has profoundly influenced your personal and professional growth?
“Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki was the catalyst that ignited my passion for financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Interestingly, it was the first book I voluntarily picked up outside of academic requirements, and its impact on my trajectory cannot be overstated.
Could you share some insights from the book that deeply resonated with you?
Absolutely!
The Right Mentality: Kiyosaki emphasizes the importance of cultivating a mindset that prioritizes assets over liabilities. This simple yet profound distinction challenged my perception of wealth creation and made me realize that achieving financial freedom is as much about mentality as it is about money.
Financial Rules and Principles: The book delves deep into foundational financial concepts. For instance, understanding the difference between assets (things that put money in your pocket) and liabilities (things that take money out of your pocket) was a pivotal lesson. Additionally, the idea that the rich don’t work for money; they make money work for them was a game-changer for me.
The Pitfalls of Traditional Employment: Kiyosaki’s comparison of the two father figures – one advocating for the traditional route of employment and the other promoting financial independence through entrepreneurship – resonated deeply with me. I realized early on that I didn’t envision myself in a conventional 9-to-5 job, and this book validated my feelings and steered me towards my current path.
How does this tie into your aspirations for your YouTube channel?
My goal with my YouTube channel mirrors the book’s ethos. While I don’t aim to offer explicit financial advice, I intend to open doors for young minds. I want to highlight the significance of financial literacy, inspire budding entrepreneurs, and provide tangible examples of side hustles and smart financial decisions. Just as “Rich Dad Poor Dad” illuminated the path for me, I hope to light the way for others, showcasing what an empowered financial mentality looks like.
