We recently connected with Kara Udziela and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kara, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I was born with cerebral palsy, which manifests for me, as weakness in the right side of my body, a right hand that really only functions as an anchor, and I have always walked with a limp. As a disabled woman who worked in technology marketing for 25 years, I feel lucky to say that only a few times have I felt the sting of rejection or discrimination against my disability.
I think other minorities would agree with me though that you do need to be completely focused, and totally on top of your game, in order to be truly SEEN and appreciated. There is pressure to prove yourself deeply.
I also think being genuinely interested in others, being gregarious, and being able to laugh at oneself puts others at ease.
Perhaps because I have always truly been physically different from most people, it eventually made it easier for me to transition from a corporate career to my current work as an animal communicator.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have been an animal communicator and energy worker for over a decade. I help pets and their people understand what their pets really need, why they are scared, and how they feel. I also teach people how to communicate with their pets, as well as meditation and metaphysical skills.
The most exciting part of my job is when people transform their frustration or worry over a beloved companion animal into empowerment and joy. Sometimes, the pets just need to be heard. This year I had one dog afraid of the beach who told me it was because she had seen animals drown in water.
It’s unusual for one session to convince a dog to release that much fear, but after I explained how the beach was different from the river she had seen, her guardian called me the next day to say she went walking on the beach with no problem.
I also love teaching people with chronically ill animals or those with an animal soulmate how to talk to animals, how to do energy work and bodywork that releases old pain and anxiety. I have several two-hour and 6-week courses starting in the summer on animal communication, bodywork, and more.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three areas that I teach people who are wanting greater connection with animals are: meditation and self-mastery, therapeutic distance, multiple energy healing modalities, and animal behavior knowledge.
Meditation- In order to receive and trust the messages you receive from animals, you have to hone your intuition. This begins with daily meditation, and practical exercises to balance your own life. If you are living in chaos, it can be difficult to be of service to animals and their people.
Therapeutic Distance- Not all pet owners are the same. They may not treat their pets with the same care that you do. Animal communicators have to be able to inspire and educate, while holding space for crying, sad, or even angry guardians, without projecting judgment or blame. As animal lovers, it is easy to put the pets first, but in order to be heard by the guardians, you must be able to be compassionate to the human as well as the animal during the session. Learning people and client management skills is crucial if you are going to be effective.
Energy Healing Modalities and Animal Behavior Knowledge: Many pets need more than just a communication session in order to shift anxiety, or release sadness, or fear. I am trained in 11 energy modalities, which I teach to clients and students, and I think all communicators should be able to do more than communicate. In addition, many humans think an animal is mean, or grumpy, or angry at them, when in reality, the animal is in pain or doing normal, instinctual behavior. Understanding how dogs, cats, and horses or other animals behave can help a lot in your work.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal clients are spiritual animal guardians- passionate animal lovers with a willingness to see the magic in everyday things. They are deeply connected to their companion animals.
They want to understand them better, to make their lives the best they can possibly be.
My ideal clients are often deeply metaphysical, love nature, and are committed to their own personal growth.
