Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ernestina Flores. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Ernestina with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I attribute my strong work ethic to the example set by my parents. Both my mom and dad have been helpful in shaping the values and ideas that guide me in my professional life. They have constantly shown me the importance of hard work, dedication, and perseverance.
From a young age, I witnessed my parents ‘work tirelessly to support our family. They instilled in me the belief that success is earned through consistency and determination. Whether it was my mom’s long hours as a daycare teacher or my dad’s dedication to his construction company, their work ethic was undeniable.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello my name is Ernestina Flores, everyone calls me Ernie. I run Flores Bakehaus along with my husband Roberto. Flores Bakehaus is a pop-up bakery in Dallas, Texas established in October of 2018. We specialize in quick breads, granolas, jams and other delicious treats. Flores Bakehaus, Our mission is to bring joy to the community through delicious and high-quality baked goods. We are dedicated to using only the finest ingredients and crafting each item with care and attention to detail.
We believe that our pop-up bakery is more than just a place to buy baked goods; it’s a hub of the community, where friends and neighbors can come together to share a moment of sweetness, support other local businesses, and now, conveniently find our delectable treats at local coffee shops.
Currently we are baking fall inspired items: pumpkin spice bread, dulce de leche empanadas and we are also planning a special menu for Thanksgiving. You check out our website for the most up to date information regarding our pop-ups. If you can not make it to one of our pop-ups, you can also find our baked goods at the following coffee shops: Everyday Works Coffee & Market in Oak Cliff, Coffee del Rey in Plano, Watermark Cofffee in North Dallas and Juju’s Coffee in East Dallas.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey: The willingness to learn keep learning have been crucial. In an ever-changing world, especially after the pandemic, being open to new ideas and perspectives is essential. It has allowed me to pivot and make the necessary changes to my business so that I can better meet the needs of my customers.
Resilience, the capacity to bounce back from setbacks, has been helpful in my journey as a small business owner. There have been numerous barriers and set backs along the way, but the ability to maintain a positive outlook, has been helpful.
Communication is another one. Good communication skills helps you better understand and respond to the needs of your customer and the people you work closely with.
The advice I give to someone who is early in their journey, remember the three qualities I previously mentioned. Also keep in mind that you are not alone in your journey. There are so many resources available to entrepreneurs. Network with other small business owners. Look for mentorship or guidance. Most of all stay persistent. Entrepreneurship can be challenging, and there will be times when you face challenges or self-doubt.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I remember that feeling overwhelmed is a common feeling. I pray and ask for guidance. I find that it helps me find peace in moments of stress. I also seek support from my family, friends or even my mentor. Having another set of eyes look at what I am feeling overwhelmed about can provide valuable insight.
Another strategy that can help so much is time management. Creating to-do list will help you reach goals. Just remember that it’s okay not to finish the list in one day. Plan your list with different columns: what needs to be done today, within this week or by the end of the month. If these don’t work for you, seek out other ideas or strategies.
