Meet Papi Flay

We recently connected with Papi Flay and have shared our conversation below.

Papi , so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
Dont be afraid to pull inspiration from different places or yourself . Ideas are all around us and a part of us . There is nothing wrong with starting from scratch and going back to the drawing board 3 or 4 times . Some of my best tracks I put out came from doing 3 tracks I deleted before hand . Remember that every piece of art starts from a blank canvas .

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Ive been writing music and doing production for about 5 years . I grew up around several music influences that naturally drew me in to it at a young age . I started off writing poetry and stories and slowly transitioned into song writing as i got older . From hearing subwoofers bumping on the block to hearing the choir and the band at church to watching mtv jams in the morning . My first solo album “ Hoop Dreams “ drops in December and my brother just put out our 3rd album “ Life is War “

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say being defiant and questioning everything would be my first quality . Nothing great ever comes from staying inside of the box or caring what others think . The second most important thing would be resilience. Falling down and getting back up every time is a part of the game you have to embrace . The third most important skill would be having an ear for sound . Knowing what the crowd will remember, sing along to , relate to . Covering every aspect of a track .

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Curtis Jackson “ Hustle smarter not harder “ has definitely played an important role in my development. His book highlights some of his business mistakes and how he bounced back . He studied the good and bad of people before him and explains how to manage a team and the pros and cons of being a boss . He doesn’t sugar coat anything . That’s my favorite part of the book
