Meet Delilah Brao

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Delilah Brao. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Delilah, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
Self care in the context of my songwriting is just letting myself write freely, or write something I would never release myself. Sometimes when I write a song, I’m already picturing the reaction something might get. It’s not really helpful and can give me writer’s block. It’s hard not to judge your own work, but sometimes writing is a long process and you need to go through a couple iterations of a thought to get to the right one. It really helps to have a consistent writing partner – someone who knows the day to day of your life as well as your tendencies as a writer.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I grew up on the North Shore of Massachusetts. I went to Berklee College of Music and earned my degree in Music Production and Engineering. My journey led me to Los Angeles during my senior year, a decision influenced by the shift to remote learning, and I’ve made this city my home ever since. Once I moved to LA, I started creating my upcoming EP, “Since You’re In New York,” set to release this spring. The EP’s first single, “Over The Phone,” came out October 20 and the music video is out November 3rd! Go stream Over The Phone!

“Since You’re In New York” delves into my first heartbreak, a universal experience that leaves a lasting impression on most people. I hope that listeners will be able to relate to the emotional journey captured in this collection of songs. Whether you’re in the mood for a sad, angry, or introspective tune, you’ll find it on the EP. While the emotions associated with getting over a breakup are quite common, I tend to write really specifically, so it gives a fresh perspective to a familiar feeling.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Going to college for music production was really helpful. I think the amount of music Berklee had us learn helps me to pick up quickly and recognize trends or patterns better. I’m definitely a curious person and am eager to learn new things. As a result, I’m pretty adaptable. I also have a wonderful support system of friends. We are constantly celebrating each other’s accomplishments. I would advise new artists to always be exercising your listening ear. The more you listen the better your music will be.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always down to get into a session with new people. I love writing indie/folk-pop stuff that’s a bit more melancholy. I tend to be a little bit of a sad girl writer as well. I love stripped-down production. I go for a very organic, wholesome sound. If that sounds like something you’re into, you can connect with me on instagram @delilahbrao.
