Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sharlyne Carla Rogers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sharlyne Carla, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose wasn’t revealed to me until after I was laid off in 2007 from my comfy, familiar office job as a quality assurance analyst for a mortgage company. By this time, I was 34 years old with a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies and 10 years of experience in the financial services industry. I looked for a new lending role for 8 months with no prospects. I had a natural gift of writing and proofreading since I was a child, but I never considered that as a career choice. However, the Lord had commissioned me to write a book earlier that year, and I lost my job the week after I sent the manuscript to a publisher. God then told me that it was the gifts He had put in me that were going to be my provision, so I began to apply for positions in the field of writing. I was able to get a job as a resume writer in 2008, and the book that I never planned nor desired to publish served as the writing sample that company required. Since then, I have assisted countless authors, businesses, and jobseekers with their writing and editing needs.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I officially started my own business in 2014 and became self-employed in 2015. As the owner of Spirit of Excellence Writing & Editing Services, LLC, I update resumes, edit diverse books, and proofread various content for both individuals and businesses. What’s most exciting about my journey is that I have been invited to speak and teach at a variety of community and ministry events simply because I’m walking in my purpose. What I want people to know about my brand is that in everything I do – whether I’m writing a book, consulting with a client, or creating a video – my main goal is to uplift, support, and strengthen someone else. I pride myself on being more than just a service provider because I genuinely care about my clients, followers, and subscribers. My new service that I will be launching soon will help first-time authors navigate the entire book writing process from conception through publishing. One-on-one coaching will also be an option for those who need a more hands-on learning experience.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three of the most impactful qualities I have acquired along my path to purpose are patience, adaptability, and ingenuity. I needed a lot of patience while working at my corporate job and trying to build my own business simultaneously. I had to wait until it was the right time financially and emotionally for me to step out into the world of entrepreneurship. I also had to be adaptable regarding the products and services that I offered. It took me a while to realize my personal value and raise my prices to match industry standards and the increasing cost of living. As a creative with multiple talents such as writing, dancing, and acting, I had to learn how to master my own ingenuity. Being a business owner equates to being a salesperson, and I have found innovative ways to market myself as well as my company. Those who are in the early stages of their professional journey should try to develop these characteristics sooner rather than later, because the ability to embrace change will be one of the main keys to their growth and success.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The biggest area of growth for me in the past 12 months has been my mindset shift regarding wealth. I never thought that the fear of success was a real or common issue until I assessed my own self-sabotaging behaviors such as procrastination and perfectionism. I thought that if I had a surplus of at least one dollar at the end of every month, I was doing well. I pretended that rushing to get things done right before a deadline was simply self-motivation or an energy boost. I was also using my spirit of excellence as an excuse to delay progress on a new book or product launch because it had to be “just right” first. I have only been able to change my mindset because I have invested in myself by participating in life-changing webinars, in-person events, and online groups consisting of professionals who have already reached the levels of success that I aspire to. I look forward to continuing my journey of self-discovery and improvement.
