We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmin Fuentes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmin, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
Taking risks can be very intimidating, especially when they are life changing. Most of the time we do not know what the outcome may be which is a main reason we all hold back. We’re afraid of failure..and that’s normal. Fear to fail and disappoint can be crippling. What if though…what if we don’t fail? What if that one, risky decision we make is the one that will change our lives for the better? That was the switch in my brain that made me want more in life no matter how many times I failed. Not just with my career, but with life in general. Risks can be an amazing thing and if we don’t take them, we would never find out what we are capable of.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a California girl but have been living in Texas for quite some time. This is where I completed high school and decided to attend beauty school later on to see what would come from it. I chose wisely because I soon realized being a hairdresser was my calling! My parents, family and friends were extremely supportive and I will forever be grateful! My mom, my motivation, never questioned me and showed me that working hard pays off especially when you do it from the heart and with a good intention. I have now been in the beauty industry for ten years. It has been a great experience and I have met amazing people along the way. Being a hairdresser is more than just hair. There’s a lot of depth within it. It’s so special in my eyes because when a woman gets her hair done, she feels empowered and beautiful. Confidence is what we all need and if I can play a part in helping someone gain it, I know I did my job!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Humility, perseverance and patience are three qualities that I believe to be extremely important and necessary when you are trying to accomplish something in life. Staying humble can be so beneficial because it reminds us that we don’t know it all. Being open to taking advice from others and willing to learn knew ways to approach our dreams can open so many doors for us in our path to success. Perseverance and patience go hand in hand. You have to keep going and keep your eye on the prize. We start a journey with a goal in mind. We can imagine what life will be like when we get there. We may take a wrong turn on the road every now and then but we focus and get back on track! We shouldn’t give up only because results aren’t coming fast enough. Great things happen with time and by then, we will have new goals in mind and that’s when we start our next journey.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Being an adult is overwhelming on its own. Ha! Im sure we are all aware. So many responsibilities. Work, bills, etc… Many of us are still learning how to deal with it including myself. When you are a person with many goals, it makes it even harder to understand and figure out a way to take things slow.
I’m the type of person that would obsess over an idea, and would give myself anxiety until it was done. It was extremely hard to get out of that. I had to learn that I could only do so much at a time. Things may take longer than expected and can also be more difficult than anticipated. Learning to let go of things that are out of our control is a mindset we should all adapt to.
At the end of the day we are human and these are things we learn along the way. We have to do things we enjoy because we only have one life. So chase your wildest dreams (in a healthy way) and make them come true for you!
