Meet Deborah Mellman

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Deborah Mellman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Deborah, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I have always been a confident person. Like I tell my clients, you have to believe in yourself because if you don’t, no one else will. Every person has a gift or talent that only they have. It is the differences that make you special, not the similarities.

I also ask myself “what’s the worst that can happen?” I lose a client? The interview doesn’t get published? Things get postponed? It’s all OK. Even I question myself and my actions from time to time but in the end it all works out. You have to remind yourself that you have value and have a lot to offer both as a creative and as a human being.

There is only one YOU and you play the part perfectly!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a personal publicist who works with up-and-coming industry talent to promote and grow their careers. I handle my select clients in a management style. That means I review every opportunity and address how it will benefit your project (or not). It also means that I plant a strong foundation for growth, by developing an all-inclusive campaign tailored to clients’ short-term and long-term goals. I enjoy working with talent who are grateful and excited about themselves and their careers. The best is taking a client down the red-carpet! The client gets love and I get to introduce my clients to the press. Everyone wins.

My philosophy is that everyone has PR potential. Everyone has something special about them as a creative and as a person. It is those special and unique qualities that make you shine and stand out!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Always have a Plan A, B, C, etc. You must plan for everything and still be able to quickly pivot if need be. You don’t always have time to plan your next move, so be prepared!

Maintain your business connections. It takes work, but it pays off. I am still in touch with people I met as an intern in the 1990’s!

Have faith in yourself. We can all make mistakes or lose our confidence. Deal with it but move on. You have value.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I believe that when you have too many tabs open in your brain, you make mistakes. When I feel overwhelmed, I make a hand-written list of everything that needs to get done and prioritize what has to be completed first. For me, I can spend a day writing a press release or biography and still make a mistake in the copy or in editing. So, I have other publicists who proof-read my work for me. When I start to second guess myself, I contact a colleague and run my thoughts by them to get feedback. You don’t have to ask for help necessarily, but you shouldn’t be afraid to reach out to peers for some guidance.
