Meet Makayla Reed

We were lucky to catch up with Makayla Reed recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Makayla, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Being confident is everything! It is so important to remember that no one is the same, everyone is unique in their own way! At the end of the day it is important to do what YOU want in life. Wear those fun colored pair of pants! Sleep until 2pm the next day! Do what you want in life and don’t let anyone try to tell you that you’re doing something the wrong way, because at the end of the day who is the creator? You! You are the creator of your own reality, live life always.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Ever since i was a teen ive always had a passion for all things skin care related. At that age i never knew there was a profession for skincare. My hobbies as a teen consisted of researching skincare products that would benefit my skin, and that’s where at all started. Fast forward to 2020, i began to research different schools to become an esthetician, that’s when i found Aveda! I was so happy to have found my career and love what i did at the same time! As a licensed Esthetician there are many different routes you can take. For me, my passion is Lash extensions and Waxing. I love making people feel beautiful and confident! In 2021 I started my own business, Kay Beauty Esthetics. My goal was to create an environment that is welcoming, cozy, and creating a space where people can be unapologetically themself. Kay Beauty Esthetics is a safe space, where every one is loved and appreciated. Offering services for everyone in need of a little self care.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Before i became an esthetician, i was a full time student at Michigan State University. I Majored in psychology with a minor in graphic design. As i went through all of those years at MSU i realized that i wasn’t fulfilled. I loved learning new things, especially the psychology aspect of how the brains works. With having a creative mind, graphic design taught me how to apply it to the real world. Had I not minored in graphic design, i would not have been able bring my Kay Beauty Esthetics social platform to life. I have always been in tune with spirtuality. i’m a firm believer that you receive what you give. Always be kind, speak with intent, and make sure all intentions are pure. Starting a business was scary and intimidating, but it was something that i deeply wanted. I kept my chin up and went for the ride. It has gotten easier but i am learning something new everyday, even 2+ years later! If i could give any advice, if you want to do something, just do it. Everything is hard and scary at first, you will align! Don’t be afraid to start over.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents and family are the ones that keep me going! When I told them I wasn’t fulfilled when i was going to MSU and wanted to change career paths, there was no doubt in their mind that I wouldn’t succeed. I told them i wanted to start a business, they told me to send a list of supplies that i needed and everything was taken care of. From booking an appointment with Kay Beauty Esthetics to sharing posts on social media, they support any way that they can! I can’t thank them enough!
