We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DJ Lee Blacqk a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Lee, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
How you project yourself defines you. My work ethics comes from wanting to be defined as the best at what I do with no questions. Growing up I was raised by my grandmother and she instilled a lot of values in me that I carry with me to date which impact my work ethic. Being able to create an end goal and attaining it, prioritizing my focus on things I want, being available and reliable as this shows how much you value your work, one of the most important ones for me is creating a rewarding system, these ethics were instilled in me from such a young age and i intend on growing up with and sharing with those around me and generations to come. Watching my grandmother go into retirement and still being considered the best at what she does with people coming to the house to give their gratitude and hearing the stories from how much of an impact she has been to them is how i want to be. This sounds like I’m talking about someone I look up to, a role model,I kinda feel like it is but her work ethics are how I value my work ethic and have incorporated it into my life, my work is my life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Letšobana Masogo aka DJ LeeBlacqk is an all round Dj. Born and raised in South Africa into a family of educators also with the hopes of becoming and educator and owning my own school(still a dream i aim to achieve). I love dancing but putting on a little extra kgs on me derailed me, i mention dancing because its one of the impacts that pushed me to becoming a dj. everytime we had a family gatheing or a friends get together i would be expected by my friends and family to play music and also be on the dancefloor, how i managed to do this to date i still do not know. People always refer to me as the best female DJ from South Africa. I’m persistent, resilient and proud of where I’m from and I stay reppin my country. Being a Dj is amazing, seeing people enjoy a party whether it’s intimate or a party party(club, event) . What’s special about it is seeing people happy. I’m focused on being a Dj because it’s what makes me happy. Being a dj may be seen as an easytask as all it is is putting songs together but in all honesty it sets the tone for the event.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Skills and qualities to be a DJ personally I think being able to read a room, music selection is everything and the will power to keep learning. these 3 qualities may be seen as trivial to the naked eye but being able to tap into them as a dj helps sets the tone of what you’re about to surprise the people with which draws them to you as a DJ. Your ability to be able to do the least expected and seeing the peoples faces in kind of a shock of “wooooooooow” is priceless. Transition skill, people skills and communication skill personally are the skills i constantly work on, when im in my zone dropping the peoples favourite tracks i seem extroverted and as if im focused while the whole time im taking deep breaths telling myself youve got this smile, dance be happy and create an unforgettable experience.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I always tell myself “you are your worst critic “ hearing both good and bad criticism always pushes me to do better which is why I always take whatever criticism and use it to my advantage in bettering myself all round. Having a moment after a gig to myself to reflect on what I just did on the deck helps me a lot. the people around me deserve this recognition and i cant mention them because i dont want to forget anyone. but those around me have really helped me overcome and build myself to being able to confidentky put myself out there and do what i love. they constantly push me and mention me to the world whilst giving me all the advise, criticism as well as the opportunity to better myself and keep growing as a DJ.
