We were lucky to catch up with Kiyah Speller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kiyah, thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?
Being someone that can be part of the victim narrative is overwhelming. Even to this day when you take your official leave of absence. My original thought that can be easily mistaken as common. Being fired is an easy task since I already felt that i wasn’t “welcome”. The way I’ve overcome the issue is by focusing on the financing for each project.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an actor for film and television. It’s surreal since I grew out of being a movie “extra”. the notation that I chose to prolong my lifespan by being observant can give off the vibe that I am submissive. That sucks. By the way, Im available for your next film.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being on time and learning social skills is what impacted my journey forsure. How will i be perceived if I’m not consistent is what I grew into. Applying that to anything in the field of acting can be beneficial especially as a woman of color.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
the most impactful thing is what they can claim to owe me which is a timeframe for being smart.
