We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Williams-Fields a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by staying connected to the world. I believe any and everything can inspire you to create. I can hear a person talking and see what they are saying on a shirt. I also like to be around creative people. They help push you to dig deeper and keep the spark going.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a wife and mom of 2 boys. I started my business 5 years ago bc I didn’t see a lot of mom and son shirts. I wanted to match with my boys. It was a hobby that turned into a business and then a passion. I love being able to create one of a kind designs and products from people. Making shirts for sporting events, graduations, memorial, and birthdays allows me to keep stretching my creativity!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Customer service skills are number 1. In any business it is important that we strive to provide the best customer service possible.
Learning your craft: In the any industry it’s easy to get sidetracked by what’s trending. You have to find what your are passionate about, hone in on it, and master that skill.
Self care: Its so easy to allow your business to consume your everyday life. You have to find a healthy balance in order to not get burnt out.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I’m currently rebuilding my business. About 6 days before graduation season ended both of my main printers for shirt making quit working. I have been focused on getting new printers and also expanding the print services that we offer. I’ve spent the summer designing and printing graphics such as banners, grave blankets, flyers, etc.
