Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dane Drewis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dane, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I really faced “imposter syndrome” when applying for jobs or trying to move up in my career. Feeling like you’re not good enough, like you’re just pretending to be something you’re not. But what I realized is….most successful people feel like they’re faking it. As i got older i realized, that almost everyone is “winging it.”
For me, what really helped was focusing on my achievements and the skills I’ve developed over time. It’s easy to forget all the things you’ve accomplished when you’re feeling down on yourself, but take a moment to really think about it.. Having a morning gratitude journal and meditation has really helped me build the confidence and clarity to see things for what they are.
Being grateful and focusing on how far you’ve already come has been the biggest help.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Lately I have really gotten the acting “bug”. I’ve been taken different acting classes and working on it daily. It has been really exciting and I haven’t been this motivated about something in years. I’ve managed to book some small speaking roles on big shows/movies and it has really been encouraging for me.
I am still (always) working on my music as well….I play 3-5x per week all over Southern CA and will be gearing up for my 3rd Summer tour in Europe. My anchor date for this year’s tour is the summer concert series at the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The skills I’ve been honing in acting class have helped with my songwriting and views on how to promote and market myself as an artist.
Please follow me on my email list and instagram for more info and updates.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Time blocks. Be organized and set timers for when you’re going to work on something fully. without distraction. 2. Make time for relaxation and introspection. Especially living in LA, everything moves so fast. Give yourself time to process everything and recover. Using time blocks.
3. Treat everyone with respect and as a new opportunity. You never know who you can help, or who can help you. Sometimes the intern or kid who needs a favor will turn out to be someone who can help you out down the road. Be nice to everyone.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
As an artist, I think it’s way better to go all-in on your strengths rather than trying to be a jack-of-all-trades. When you focus on what you’re truly passionate about and really good at, you can stand out from the competition and create work that really speaks to your niche audience.
I mean….yes, it’s important to work on your weaknesses if they’re really holding you back, but I don’t waste too much time on stuff I’m not naturally good at. Maybe will try things as a hobby for fun or a challenge…..It’s much more fulfilling to work on the things you’re passionate about, and it can lead to some really amazing work.
By strengthening stuff you’re already good/naturally talented at, you can create a unique voice and style that sets you apart from the rest. And the best part, sometimes the weaknesses improve over time just by proxy.
