Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Buddy Mohmed. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Buddy, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I approach life ‘day by day’. I usually plan my day (not that I always follow my plans!) the night before, including working out, practice, writing, and meals, and review my plans in the morning with my espresso.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I perform, record, and teach music. I have been doing this longer than I want to reveal, because as a musician, I still pretend that I”m in my 20s-30s. I play music because I feel compelled to do it, and I love doing it. I also enjoy the myriad people I meet and the many places I get to travel. I’ve enjoyed being part of great performances and creations, and I enjoy the feeling of writing, rehearsing, and performing/recording new music and art .
I am based in Dallas TX, from where freelance locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. I also teach guitar and bass and music improv/jazz.
When I can find time, I upload videos to my Youtube channel.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being a musician and performer entails many different skills and activities. Three that I feel are most important, and that I teach my students, are effort, time, and repetition. I feel there really is little or no ‘natural’ talent, but that we achieve goals through our efforts and willingness to sacrifice time to practice and rehearse and refine our art. The thing that served me most is probably perseverance and ignoring discouraging ‘signs’ and events and people. I wanted it, so I kept working at it.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I sought teachers and mentors from early on. I had some great teachers and mentors, and some not-so-great teachers. I learned from them all. I have never stopped seeking new teachers – I’m getting a little old for ‘mentors’, so instead I have and seek collaborators and peers – and still endeavor to learn and grow each day.
