Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to AKIRA KOMATSU. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
AKIRA, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I entered one of the best college preparatory high school in Tokyo because I was ,so to say, a brilliant student until junior high school but not enough to survive in that high school.I managed to graduate from the science course of the school by taking makeup exam, almost dropping out. You know, it’s an usual case that a student has difficulty in high school even if he has been called as a prodigy in junior high, you might be one of those, right? “ I’ve got a Teflon mind by going through the tough school days”, hahaha.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have worked as a media composer for years. I have scored for TV and radio commercials, company promotion, and events such as tourist promotion at the Japan Pavilion for Expo 2010 Shanghai, China. I had released a library music album, composed, recorded, and produced entirely by myself on the music library company FliberMusic. My music has been licensed in many TV and radio programs, starting with “America’s Book of Secrets” on History, and not only in the United States but in various countries such as Austria, Germany, Japan, Romania, United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico, and so on. I have more than one hundred lists of library music online and keep piling up new kinds of stuff. I love scoring for movies, too. I have composed for almost 40 indie films so far and hope I will be able to work for significant studio work in the future.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I am Japanese, and English is my second language. I have had many opportunities to meet new people thanks to the skill to handle both languages. I play Jazz guitar, and improvisation is another communication tool. You can communicate another level of humanity with new friends even if you don’t have a common language. Composing for film is the top priority in my career. I love the chemistry when pictures and music meet. Be you and healthy always.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I started jogging at the beginning of July because my body didn’t recover in a week after a gig that was been a while to play on stage. It took longer than that. I read an article that Mick Jagger runs 8 miles every day. You sure know he is 80 years old. I am trying to be able to run the same distance. I have come to run 4.4 miles now for three months since I started jogging. I want to be able to run 8 miles like Mr. Jagger and keep it till I die.
