Meet Jessica Taylor

We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
“If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary. “– Jim Rohn

I saw a businesswoman I admire discuss the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Cohort Program. I decided to take the leap and apply. Preparing my qualifications for the program was a very arduous process. After several rounds of interviews, completing pages of paperwork, and background checks I was accepted into the program.

This was a big risk for me because I was also working full-time at the time. This program lasted for 14 weeks and was in person 1-2 times per week. Graduating from this program was a major accomplishment for me. The challenging homework and peer activities weren’t easy. Now, I am seeing the fruits of sacrificing a lot for this program. I learned a ton of priceless life lessons and business practices that I implement on a regular basis. Going through any cohort program takes a lot of commitment and discipline.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am the founder of Captivating Home Collection, LLC/CHC Design Group. We are a women-owned privately held limited liability company that is based in the DFW Metroplex. Our showroom and warehouse facility are in Grand Prairie, TX. We have successfully completed projects all over TX and in California.

I come from a long line of entrepreneurs, and it was my destiny to get into the décor industry. We offer residential, commercial, home staging, and special event design services.

My dad introduced me to the furniture world over 20+ years ago while he ran an antique/home goods business. My mother was very creative, and she designed beautiful wall art. I learned how to find vendors, provide customer service, stock merchandise, price items, and resell goods from my dad. I founded CHC in May 2014, and now we have grown to a team of 6. Our projects have been continuing to grow and evolve. We hope we can encourage other small business owners to never give up on their dreams.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
We model our business by these three qualities: 1.) Leader in quality products and service
2.) Prompt and reliable communication
3.) Cutting-edge design with a modern flair at a great price

I highly recommend that all business owners find their niche and target market. I also believe in saying no and not taking on projects that don’t suit your business. I faced many challenges getting into the furniture and décor field. It was an uphill battle, but I refused to give up. It is important to take classes, learn more skills, and even find a mentor. Continuing education is vital for any business and with the right determination you will succeed.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
“I’ve learned that you can’t have everything and do everything at the same time” – Oprah Winfrey

For most of my professional career, I have worked full-time and run a growing business. Juggling multiple hats and responsibilities is a skill of mine. I used to thrive on having a busy schedule and a full agenda. Over the years, I had moments where I felt burnt out or overwhelmed.

Creating a consistent work-life balance is key for the growth of a company. I learned to delegate tasks to my team and hire professionals to assist me. My hobbies include spending time with loved ones, traveling, and going to spas on a regular basis. No one wants to do business with someone who is frazzled and unhappy.

One of my biggest pieces of advice is to schedule time to relax and decompress from work every week. It could be having a long lunch, going for a walk, or playing relaxing music. Mental health and personal wellness are very important for the long-term success of your company.
