We recently connected with Cherrell Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Cherrell, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
There is a quote by Diane Ackerman that really put things into perspective for me, in which she said, “I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find that I have just lived the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.” For me, this meant living my life to the fullest rather than trying to escape it. It meant putting away old habits that did not add value to my life in order to open more doors of opportunity. I found my purpose when I realized that life does not have to be defined by what happened to me, but rather how I responded to it. When I chose to dig deeper and find out what matters to me most, I discovered my strengths, talents, and what really felt good in my heart and soul. Once I was able to help myself, I discovered my purpose was to help others.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
For as long as I can remember I have always had an interest in helping others, inside and out. This could vary anywhere from giving mini makeovers to giving advice to friends and family. With my interest in wanting to help people, and how the mind works, I mulled over the idea of going back to school for Psychology. It wasn’t until I struggled with adult acne that I became intrigued with how the skin works, and I wanted to learn more.
In 2018, I enrolled in a local aesthetics program, where I gained the knowledge and skills to pursue a career as an esthetician. Since becoming an esthetician, I have found the most gratifying part is watching the skin transform from the services I have performed. The trust and bond that I have with my clients creates a safe place for them to not only be vulnerable about their skin issues, but often their personal life, which doubles as a form of therapy for my client and myself!
Without a doubt I know this career choice is the perfect platform for me to display my dedication to skin care and my genuine passion to help others. So much so that I am now back in school to become an Aesthetics Nurse and expand my business, My Milk and Honey Aesthetics!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most impactful qualities that I embodied on my journey to becoming an esthetician was having courage, steadfastness, and faith. Prior to starting aesthetics school in 2018, I was at a crossroads in my life that would take a great deal of courage to push through the fear of failure and rejection. Regardless of how chaotic the circumstances were, I knew that it was essential for me to have unwavering determination and resilience. My courage was supported by being steadfast in my end goal of being a successful business owner. Most importantly, my faith in God and the talents He instilled in me has kept me driven and has ultimately changed the overall course of my life for the better!
My advice to those starting out in their journey to entrepreneurship is to invest in yourself, especially in areas that could use improvement. Whether the goal is to overcome a fear of public speaking, build leadership skills, or practice better money management–invest in a course that will perfect these areas. Be open to constructive criticism and don’t be afraid to ask for help!
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
An ideal client is someone who has a great deal of patience as treating the skin can take weeks and even months to see drastic improvement. This client would also recognize that having a consistent skincare regimen takes discipline and often lifestyle changes. Lastly, the client would understand that skincare is an investment–key product ingredients and services needed to treat their skin concerns may be expensive, but the lasting results will be worth every penny!
