We were lucky to catch up with Clifford Mills recently and have shared our conversation below.
Clifford, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity really came through the first time I saw people dance to the music I was playing with my friends. I never want to stop giving that enjoyment to people.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
It’s kind of funny how I got started. I wanted to be in a band in high school and wanted to play guitar. But my friend was rich so he got a guitar before I did. I got a bass guitar. I thought “I’m a loser. No way I’m doing this more than a year”. But here I am, 16 years later and I’m still playing. What I would like to say to any reader is this: the bass is amazing.
All that aside I have a podcast called “My Best Friend’s Wife’s Podcast” and am starting a clothing company. I’ll admit, it’s pretty stupid to try and do that. But do it anyway.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My three qualities, skills, or whatever that have impacted my journey is just being a master of none. If I break it down simply: music, art, and athletics. And then a hundred more things. Why not try them? World was circling before you were born, it’ll still be when you’re gone. May as well do some things during the rotations.
Also, don’t be afraid. We all are. Remember that. If you’re on stage, know that they’d probably be shi**ing themselves in your situation. You made it on the stage. You’re amazing
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Honestly, “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” helped me and inspired me a lot. It is so funny, while also bringing up the philosophical absurdity of existence. If there were anything that helped to form my sense of humor, it’s that book.

- Other: I’m pretty simple. I don’t like advertising myself. I just like to go and play music for people and make connections naturally. It’s a lot of fun! You meet way more amazing people in person.
