Meet Rogerio Maudonnet

We recently connected with Rogerio Maudonnet and have shared our conversation below.

Rogerio , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Music has been an essential part of my life since a very young age. I began playing classical guitar at the age of 13 and joined my first band at 16, playing the electric guitar. I have always been fascinated by the process of writing, producing, and recording songs. At the age of 18, I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in music composition, but I was uncertain about how to navigate the business aspect of it. Fortunately, a few years later, I came across an audio production studio that specialized in creating music for TV commercials and jingles. I started an internship at the studio, which later led to me becoming an assistant to one of the composers working there.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Brazilian composer, guitarist, and sound engineer. In the 90s, I started playing in cover bands, and in 2001, I was granted a scholarship to attend the Berklee Summer program – Guitar Sessions, provided by Fender Instruments. After that, I formed an instrumental jazz-rock trio and started playing in several clubs and venues. In 2005, I independently released my debut album, which was self-titled, and in 2007, I was one of the finalists of the North American Rock Guitar Competition in Buffalo, NY. My music caught the attention of some guitar magazines, such as Guitar Player (USA), Guitarra Total (Spain), and Cover Guitarra (Brazil).

My career as a composer started in the 90s as well when I did an internship in a recording studio in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The owners were specialized in writing jingles and the studio was quite busy with recording sessions every day. That was the first time that I had contact with music produced on-demand with a briefing. Even though I quickly became the studio’s session guitarist, my goal by that time was to learn how to produce a track from start to finish. A few years later, I was an in-house composer in one of the biggest audio production companies in Brazil, where I produced jingles and wrote music for TV commercials. That gave me the experience to start my own business, writing music for clients such as Walmart, Coppertone, Oral-B, and Gillette. I have learned a lot about handling major ad campaigns, short deadlines, and client expectations.

As a sound engineer, I was responsible for the audio localization of acclaimed titles such as LucasArts’ Jedi Knight and Grim Fandango, the latter considered one of the best-dubbed versions of all time in Brazil.

Looking for new challenges, I moved to LA about six years ago. Here, I had the opportunity to compose for an indie feature film called “8 Slices” directed by Nick Westfall, and reality TV shows such as “Below Deck,” “The Real Housewives of New York City,” and “Gordon Ramsay’s 24h to Hell and Back.” My music has been featured in several other TV shows, including “What We Do In The Shadows” and “Expedition Unknown.”

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities have had a significant impact on my journey.

Firstly, resilience is crucial as it helps you persevere in the face of challenges and setbacks, learn from failures, and keep moving forward.

Secondly, adaptability is essential for success as the world is constantly changing, and the ability to adapt to new technologies and trends is necessary.

Lastly, continuous learning is important because it helps you stay curious and open to new ideas, skills, and perspectives. It is vital never to stop learning.

If you are at the beginning of your journey, my advice to you would be to:

Explore: Don’t be hesitant to experiment with different things and explore various opportunities. This is how you discover what truly resonates with you.

Network: Connect with people who share your interests and can offer guidance. Networking can open up new opportunities and perspectives.

Learn: Embrace a growth mindset and never stop learning. The more you learn, the more you grow.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always open to collaborating with like-minded individuals who share my passion for music. If you’re interested, feel free to contact me at rogerio@maudonnet.com.
