Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Triana Akila. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Triana, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Being in the music industry, I found imposter syndrome around what felt like every corner. I told myself that I wasn’t skilled enough, experienced enough, determined enough. But then I put myself in rooms with both peers and veterans and I gave a true evaluation. I belonged in the room! I’ve put in the time, I’ve honed my skill, and now is my time! Where I am now is a result of every piece of preparation that has brought me this far. So no matter who else is doing something similar, I have something unique to give to the world.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m just a Christ-lover singing my testimony and I just dropped my debut EP: Love Chronicles! What I love about what I do is that there’s no one that does it quite like me. My music is VERY vulnerable, because I realize that what I’ve gone through is not meant for me – so I share for others to relate and even find healing. Check me out on your favorite digital music platform!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Aside from musical skill I’d say confidence, patience, and perseverance have been my best friends along this journey. For those just starting out, know that you are right where and when you’re supposed to be, so walk in that! Know who you are and trust that all will work out; just keep pushing.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Self-promotion is the bane of my artistry! In a perfect world, I’d just drop my music and automatically everyone could hear it. But lo, I have to work on marketing myself, especially via social media. It’s difficult to stick to all the trends and algorithms; it’s like a full time job in itself. But I’m posting more regularly and using my friends and resources to push out quality content.
