We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
I avoided burnout by changing my mindset to not believe that it is even possible for me to burnout. As long as I am the most powerful version of myself possible, burnout becomes impossible.
The definition of burnout is “a state of complete mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion” which becomes impossible if I follow these 3 fundamental principles.
1) Make all realms of my health a daily priority – physical, mental, and spiritual
2) Always strive to improve and to become the best version of myself in whatever path I choose
3) Enjoy the journey
It starts with having a good daily routine. Good daily exercise, good daily sleep, good daily nutrition, good daily hobbies and practices, surrounding yourself with good people daily, creating moments of relaxation daily, and enjoying the process daily.
On the flip side of the same coin, don’t “shoot yourself in the foot” by making decisions and engaging in activities or relationships that actively work against you. Every action I take and every fiber of my body down to my cells is working together in synergistic harmony to my benefit, not to my detriment.
It is amazing how much of your own bandwidth can be consumed by unnecessary things working against you if you allow it and how much stronger you become when you remove them.
We are either improving or we are getting worse – there is no such thing as “status quo”. So if someone asks you how you are doing and you answer “same old, same old”, that means by definition you are regressing.
The earth and our bodies are in a perpetual state of decay. While at face value this may seem depressing, this means we have unlimited potential to add value to our lives and to the world around us. There is always something broken that needs to be fixed and always people around us that need help that we want to be able to help.
Jim Rohn famously said, “The average person dies seven years after they retire. What’s the moral? Don’t retire!”. While I am not saying you should work until you die, we should never stop improving or stop working towards becoming the best version of ourselves, regardless of our age.
It is important to always enjoy the journey because the man or woman who enjoys the journey will always go further than the man or woman who enjoys the destination.
Life is difficult, life is stressful, life is always going to challenge us but it is imperative that we still enjoy the journey and remember we as humans are extremely resilient. Our trials and tribulations make us stronger if we learn to extrapolate wisdom out of each experience.
With this mindset, mistakes become investments. It makes it easier to be thankful for the good in our lives instead of complaining about the bad in our lives. This gives us tremendous strength and energy, especially compounded over time.
Sometimes when we think we are experiencing “burnout” we are actually experiencing an internal “call to action”. This is innate, telling us we need to change something(s) in our day-to-day lives.
Something that if left unchanged will literally slowly kill us over time, much like a frog that is set in cold water and then has the temperature turned up slowly over time until it is at a boil.
The essence of the boiling frog syndrome is that when our lives deteriorate gradually, we adapt to these conditions instead of getting rid of them until we are no longer strong enough to escape.
The boiling frog syndrome may occur in our health, relationships, interactions, or work-related situations which can lead us to feel like we are experiencing burnout when in reality it is something instinctual inside of us, a self-defense mechanism, telling us we need to make a move and we need to make it fast!
If you curate your existence using these fundamental principles you will become the most powerful version of yourself, you will become indefatigable, and burnout will become impossible.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Cryo Nation is a health and wellness center based around cryotherapy! We provide simple sustainable solutions for recovery, fat loss, overall wellness, and longevity.
We are a wellness center unlike any other out there, offering a unique combination of wellness services that can’t be found anywhere else. We have the latest cutting-edge technology to empower you to achieve more. Our cryotherapy units offer the most advanced technology on the market, coming straight from Finland.
The primary purpose is to minimize inflammation or “fire” in the body as well as release anti-aging cold shock proteins into the blood stream which has countless benefits. Cryotherapy is a 3-minute or less process that involves hyper cooling just the skin temperature from the neck and shoulders down to the feet. It is an incredibly easy and fast process with zero downtime and unrivaled benefits.
In a nutshell, we tell our customers, your food isn’t the only thing preserved in the cold – freeze yourself and extend your expiration date as well! When combined with our other goods and services, Cryo Nation offers unparalleled value that you literally can’t find anywhere else.
Having opened in March of 2014, and “freezing” more customers at our flagship location in Grapevine, TX than any other cryo location in the world, Cryo Nation is leading the way for the rest of the industry! We have multiple locations and are expanding rapidly as we are opening more corporate and franchise locations. We are primed to be the number one cryotherapy provider in the US and the planet as we are opening more Cryo Nations across the nation!
What I love most about what we do is the tremendous impact we are having and the countless number of people we are helping! We are empowering people to live their best lives and the results are truly amazing! Our customers range from 5 and 6-year-old gymnasts all the way to 100-year-olds, so we have customers coming in for a wide range of reasons and the feedback and the love we receive back from our customers gives me goosebumps…and not because I’m cold from the cryotherapy!
We are in a hyper-growth phase which is very exciting because this means we are accomplishing our mission of multiplying our sphere of influence, helping as many people as possible, and freezing as many people as possible! GET COLD, NOT OLD!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that I have had to develop which have been impactful and instrumental in my journey are:
1) THE ABILITY TO INVERT ALL FAILURE INTO SUCCESS. You are going to fail often, especially if you want to be successful as success and failure are linked together. The path to success is not a straight line but is a rugged, zigzag of a path going from one failure to the next failure without any loss of enthusiasm but instead making micro improvements the entire time along the way. Part of the learning process is to make a positive out of all situations, especially your mistakes, losses, and failures. This requires being able to extract the wisdom out of each mistake. They say, “Pain + Reflection = Progress” and it is completely true. If you are self-aware, analytical, and logical (not emotional) when it comes to recognizing your mistakes and what adjustments you need to make, your mistakes become investments in your own future and you will become an unstoppable force because with this mindset even your mistakes are converted into a positive.
2) HIGH-STRESS TOLERANCE. How successful you are is directly related to your ability to tolerate and take on stress. If you want something that is extremely valuable, then by definition you also want something that is very difficult and stressful. So, if you are encountering higher levels of stress in your journey, that is an indicator of success because the further you progress the more stress and difficulty you can expect. So now with this mindset when I encounter difficulties, problems, or stress, the first thing I say is, “Good!”. “My cryo machine has maintenance issues? Good!”. “That unexpected expense hit my account? Good!”. “I feel like I am exhausted. Good!”. Let me use this feeling and convert it into an endless source of energy. The beautiful thing about this mindset is the more stress I encounter, the more energy I have, the more I can accomplish, and the bigger of a burden I can carry allowing me to have a greater impact and achieve monumental success in all realms.
3) SPEED. It is all about speed! You don’t have time to waste. You must take massive action and you must do it quickly and decisively – the only wrong action is inaction. People tell you to be patient but you can’t patiently wait your way to success. You must chase after success relentlessly and unforgivingly, You must be willing to give up having a “balanced life” (at least initially) if you want to succeed to your full potential. This means waking up early, staying up late, and not wasting time. Your goal should be to turn your 10-year plan into a 2-year plan. You must outwork and outpace the competition because everything in life is a competition and if you are chasing after something valuable you can be certain that countless other people are chasing after the same thing you are. You must realize and accept that you are in direct, never-ending competition. The moment you lose your focus, become distracted or slow down, you are giving your competition an advantage.
If you are early on in your journey, the best way to improve on these skills and all the other necessary attributes one needs to be successful is to have the discipline to focus on yourself and whatever your goals are. Your goals need to be meticulously defined and outlined so you know precisely what you are aiming towards and so that you can measure your progress towards those goals.
You must be able to say “no”. Say “no” to wasting time on social media, “no” to certain social engagements, “no” to friends who don’t value your time (or their own time), and “no” to other distractions that are not serving you and your goals. Certainly, don’t clout chase or go out of your way to impress others – that is a complete waste of time, energy, and resources.
Humble yourself. Don’t have an ego but always remain confident in your ability and never doubt yourself. Be willing to start small. Be willing to go all in. Don’t be afraid to fail. Be extremely perspicacious in everything you do. Enjoy the never-ending journey, the constant refining process, and always trying to become the best version of yourself – you have nothing better and more meaningful to do anyway.
