We were lucky to catch up with Annalisa Giolo Dunker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Annalisa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
From my “why”. I get my resilience from the protagonists of all my songs, videos and artwork: nature, animals, our precious Earth. Resilience comes from my will to speak up, to give a voice to those who don’t have one (or are not listened to). Every time I feel tired, or discouraged, or when everything seems to difficult, I reconnect with the reason why I started, with my deep love for the natural world, and with the fierce hope to change things. It always helps, and it always brings me back to a deeper connection with myself, my art, and my fans. Resilience is much harder when you are not motivated, or when you don’t believe in what you do. The first ingredient for resilience is finding your true mission, so the hardships will only make you stronger.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello all! My name is Annalisa (Inanna as an artist). I am a singer, producer and environmental advocate of Italian origins. My main occupation is giving a voice and amplifying voices for the future of the planet: I make music dedicated to the Earth, and I run a non-profit called Better Earth Media, dedicated to promoting initiatives and individuals who are making a difference in the environmental media space.
My musical alter ego, Inanna, is a mythological figure (the Sumerian Goddess of love, fertility, harvest, but also war and justice), full of symbolic charge, and was the inspiration for a new genre-bending project, where warm ancient Middle Eastern sounds are melted together with the most contemporary, dark and hypnotic soundscapes. All songs bring an environmental message, they explore and witness tough aspects of the age of the Anthropocene, but also bring a hopeful vision for possible green futures on Earth.
Inanna’s and Better Earth Media’s main goal is to help move environmental concerns to the forefront of culture. Through artistic and production work, I do what I can to promote ways to create a better earth for all, where nature, animals and humans can thrive together.
As Inanna, after more than 15 releases and music videos, I am now working on new songs and a new collaboration with Digital 21 and Stefan Olsdal (from Placebo). As Better Earth Media, after another event at Soho House on Sustainability in Film, we are already planning for our next live talks and networking events for end of 2023 and 2024. The green movement is growing and we are trying to contribute to it as much as we can!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most useful skills and qualities that helped me in this journey so far have been: – the capacity to connect with people and make them connect. I love networking, hosting and seeing how people meet, get to collaborate, create the future together;
– a passion for deeper meaning, for looking under the surface of things: my lyrics and projects always try to touch many layers of an issue or an emotion, considering both the conscious and subconscious nature of individuals and collectives;
– the courage to change, to bet, to risk: I would have never been able to get where I am now, and to do that things I have done without a bit of bravery and some calculated risk. The most important things we do in life often start with a bit of fear and a leap of faith.
I always recommend one thing: find your mission, pick your cause (there are so many things to improve in this world!), and make it your job as much as you can. Adversities will be a little easier to overcome when your motivated by your passion and life mission.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Several books, films and music have impacted me significantly throughout my life, but one I read recently was quite special and stimulating. It is called “The Art of Activism”, by S. Duncombe and S. Lambert. It is a very accessible guide on how the emotional and collective power of art combined with the strategic planning of activism can create progressive and durable cultural change. Art can present facts in ways that people can understand, integrate, elaborate and act upon, often extending its reach beyond the capabilities of traditional activism. The first step for the beginning of a movement, is being moved by something. And art has the power to move us, as individuals, and as a collective.
