Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alysha M. Campbell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alysha M., thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
It’s been quite a ride, I must say. Taking risks means stepping out of your comfort zone. And let me tell you, diving into the world of Strategic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) was a risk worth taking. Leading diversity projects and fostering inclusive cultures wasn’t easy at first, but it’s in these uncomfortable spaces where real growth happens.
Starting CultureShift HR was a bold move. The path wasn’t clear and DEI was a new concept for many companies but I had a burning passion to create work environments that were not only diverse, but also inclusive.
I’ve learned that part of taking risks is building your tolerance for them. It’s about equipping yourself to distinguish between a risk and a calculated risk. Understanding the landscape is crucial in any journey. My experience working with talent in Canada, the US, and internationally has given me valuable insights into talent engagement and its impact on organizational culture. This knowledge has helped me navigate the risks and challenges that come my way.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the founder of CultureShift HR, a strategic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Fractional HR Consulting firm that helps organizations build inclusive cultures. What sets us apart is our commitment to creating work environments where everyone, regardless of their background, feels valued and included. We believe that diversity is not just about numbers; it’s about creating a space where everyone’s voice matters.
Recently, we partnered with PeopleGuru™, a premier Human Capital Management software company. This partnership aims to further the cause of DEI in the workplace by integrating it into the very fabric of HR systems and processes. I’m excited about this collaboration because it allows us to leverage technology to make DEI an inherent part of organizational culture rather than an afterthought.
In addition to CultureShift HR, I’d love to tell you about Black Places Equal Safe Spaces (B.P.E.S.S.) which is a non-profit. Through B.P.E.S.S., we address mental health issues in the Black community by creating safe spaces for dialogue, support, and healing. Our work is centered around the belief that mental health should never be a taboo topic and that everyone deserves access to resources and support for their mental well-being. We host free webinars online and on-site on occasion that are free for anyone to access.
What excites me the most about these ventures is the potential for real, meaningful change. Whether it’s through fostering inclusive workplaces with CultureShift HR or advocating for mental health with B.P.E.S.S., every step we take brings us closer to a world that celebrates diversity and champions inclusivity.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say that resilience, keeping an open mind, and the ability to build meaningful relationships have been the most impactful qualities in my path.
Resilience is like a muscle that you need to flex and strengthen regularly. My journey has had its fair share of ups and downs, but it was the resilience that helped me navigate through the rough patches.
Keeping an open mind has been another pivotal quality. In a field as dynamic and evolving as ours, openness to new ideas, perspectives, and ways of doing things is essential. This openness has allowed me to learn from others, adapt to changes, and continually innovate in our approaches to DEI.
Lastly, and arguably a very important quality if not the most, is the ability to forge meaningful relationships has been a cornerstone of my success. Whether it’s with clients, partners, or team members, strong relationships built on respect, trust, and mutual understanding have been invaluable. People appreciate authenticity, and it’s the authentic connections that lead to lasting relationships.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always open to collaboration. I believe that to drive real change, we need to work together and pool our resources, ideas, and energy.
The kind of partners I’m looking to collaborate with are those who share my and my company’s passion for making workplaces more inclusive and equitable. They should be people who are not just willing but excited to challenge the status quo and work towards creating a better future. It’s important that they value diversity, respect others’ perspectives, and understand the importance of equitable practices in the workspace.
I’m particularly interested in partnering with those who can bring something unique to the table – whether it’s fresh insights, innovative strategies, or a different way of approaching problems. I strongly believe that diversity in thought leads to better solutions.
If you’re reading this and feel like we could create something meaningful together, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can connect with me via email at [email protected].
Let’s have a conversation about how we can join forces to make our workplaces more inclusive and equitable. I’m excited to hear from you and explore the possibilities of what we can achieve together.
