We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daisy Noemi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daisy below.
Daisy, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I developed confidence and self-esteem as I got older. That seems cliché but because I grew older, I felt more comfortable making choices that favored my path. I now wear clothes that make me feel good instead dressing to fit a stereotype or the male gaze. In my career, I’ve made risky moves that I felt would help propel my career forward instead of staying in the same job because it was comfortable. I also made sure to surround myself with supportive friends! They were and still are there for me when I’m down or if I need a second opinion on x-y-z life choice.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hello!
I’m Daisy. I love shooting on film and building a community. I’ve spent about 10 years helping organize the L.A. Zine Fest — a local DIY zine festival. This year was our first year back in-person since the pandemic has started. It was wonderful to see all the zine creators together in one space again. It made me feel warm and fuzzy inside! Because of LAZF, I have also learned to be a great project manager. This skillset has led me on a path I didn’t know I could walk on. For that, I’m very thankful for the opportunity and experience LAZF has provided me. It has also taught me the importance of community and community building. We really can’t exist without one another and its very important to me to help where I can.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Failing. Fun. Organization.
To me every mistake made is a mistake one can learn from! If you fail at something, roll up your sleeves and try again! Freelancing can be stressful and overwhelming but its important to be able to take a step back and remember to take a break to let loose and have some fun — either on or off the clock. I love being organized! It really helps me keep moving forward either on projects or day-to-day tasks. If you struggle with organization, there are plenty of tools out there that can help you stay on track.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
A few years ago, I was laid off and naturally, it made me depressed ’cause the struggle was too real with finding a job. I searched the webs for a self-help book that looked helpful to me and found Jen Sincero’s “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life”. This book helped me profoundly. It slapped me across my face, picked me up and showed me the light at the end of the tunnel. Not because it was very deep per say, but because it reminded me of all the things that existed in my person and character that were and still are great. I believe there were a few exercises in there too. Gotta face the sadness, you know.
