We were lucky to catch up with Brittany Rizzo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I had to work incredibly hard for it. For myself. There was a point in my life where I had none. I let everything on the outside define me. I went through a rigorous therapy program, five hours a day five days a week. It helped me learn who I am, and all that I am worth. I fought hard for myself because I knew deep down I deserved to be happy and free. I deserved to love who I am and what I offer. Now that my foundation is sturdy and I got through some of the darkest times, I am confident I can do anything.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an actress, but first and foremost I am a mental health advocate. My podcast My Only Friends ties the two together. I came up with the title My Only Friends because sometimes it truly feels like the cast of Friends are the only people I relate to or want to be around when my mental health gets bad (or after a long day working in customer service haha) I have to hear their voices as I fall asleep to stop the ruminating thoughts. If I go too long without watching Friends, I don’t feel like myself! That show has gotten me through some of my hardest times, never leaving me lonely. I’m inspired by every actor on the show, and find so much comfort in the characters. On My Only Friends podcast I invite actors, writers, and other creatives on to talk about the shows that have helped them through a difficult time and inspired them.I ask questions like, “When is the first time you saw yourself in a character?” or ” What is the best piece of advice you have gotten for your mental health?” Through the podcast I have learned so much, met amazing people, laughed a lot, and have continued to heal parts of myself.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I started my podcast not knowing a single thing. With the help of my friends Jenny Curtis and Adam Choit, I learned so much. Find the people who inspire you or who you respect and ask them for guidance. The real leaders always look back to see how they can help who’s behind them. It’s also so important to have self confidence, trusting that you can learn something new. You also get to learn a lot about yourself when starting a new endeavor which is really exciting. Lastly, don’t forget why you started. Stay true to who you are, the rest will fall into place.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Call a FRIEND. There is no better life line than phone a friend. I am so extremely grateful for my friends and how supportive they are. Having people I can be 100 percent honest with and who help me problem solve. When life gets overwhelming you have to focus on what you can control and give that your attention. Living in the “what if” will rob you of the present moment. It’s all worked out before and it will work out again.
