We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amelia Mirabello a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amelia, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I am a firm believer in the power of positive thinking, gratitude, and resilience. Throughout my career I have learned that when I am faced with challenges, it is best to look for the silver lining or potential opportunities for growth. My advice for those who are struggling to stay optimistic is: Understand that some things are beyond your control, and it’s okay not to have control over everything. Acceptance is the first step to staying mindful. Focus on the actions or decisions that are within your power and if a situation is causing you unnecessary distress, consider setting some boundaries. Understand that holding on to negative emotions won’t change any situation. Letting go of what you can’t control can bring a sense of relief and peace. Practicing this daily has caused me to have a very positive outlook on my life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
From a young age, I discovered the world of art, thanks to my grandmother who nurtured my creative spirit. As I dipped my brushes into vibrant colors, I began a lifelong love affair with artistic expression. Educator by trade, I found fulfillment in shaping young minds and guiding them towards a brighter future. But life has a way of opening new doors, and in the quest to explore other passions, I discovered my love for makeup artistry. With my summers off, I ventured into the world of makeup, and the transformation was extraordinary. The canvas shifted from paper to the faces of beautiful souls. As a professional makeup artist, I found my calling. It’s more than a job; it’s a journey of self-discovery with every client, a chance to enhance confidence, and a way to share my love for art while being delightfully social. Now, I’ve found my true calling in the world of weddings. As a professional makeup artist, I am privileged to be a part of the most magical day in someone’s life, adding a touch of elegance and confidence to their journey.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Artistry runs deep in my veins, thanks to the influence of my grandmother, a seasoned professional artist. From the very beginning, she ignited my passion for the creative world and imparted the skills that now define my journey as a makeup artist. Growing up, I was fortunate to be mentored by her. She introduced me to the world of color, form, and the power of storytelling through art. Her guidance went far beyond just brushes and paints; she taught me to see beauty in every detail and to express emotion through artistry. With her expertise as my foundation, I delved into the world of makeup artistry. Every stroke of a makeup brush became an homage to the techniques and insights she had shared. The understanding of light, shadow, and the endless palette of colors was second nature, thanks to her. Three skills I can highlight are:
Artistic Mastery: With a strong foundation in artistry passed down from my grandmother, I’ve developed an acute eye for color, form, and detail. This skill allows me to create beautiful and harmonious makeup looks that enhance the natural beauty of my clients.
Interpersonal Expertise: Years of working in the education field have honed my ability to connect with people and put them at ease. This skill translates seamlessly into my work as a makeup artist, where I not only create stunning looks but also provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience for my clients.
Adaptability and Versatility: Every face is unique, and I have honed my ability to adapt to different skin types, tones, and preferences. This versatility ensures that I can tailor my makeup artistry to suit the individual needs and desires of each client, whether it’s for a wedding, a special event, or a photoshoot.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
A profound and impactful gift from my parents was allowing me to travel the world at a young age. This experience taught me a range of invaluable life lessons and skills, including Cultural Awareness, Global Perspective, Independence, Adaptability, and Communication Skills. The opportunity to travel at a young age is a gift that keeps on giving, as the lessons and experiences from those adventures continue to influence my personal and professional growth. Exposure to new art, music, and ideas can provide fresh perspectives and creative insights, which are valuable in my profession. Travel exposed me to diverse cultures, people, and environments. It broadened my perspective and fostered a more open-minded and inclusive outlook. Travel requires self-reliance, problem-solving, and decision-making. These skills enhanced my independence and self-confidence. Overall, the personal growth and skills acquired through travel positively influenced my personal and professional life. It made me a more well-rounded, adaptable, and culturally aware individual with a valuable skill set. I am eternally grateful to my parents for the incredible gift they bestowed upon me by nurturing my love for travel at a young age. Their belief in the transformative power of exploration and the beauty of the world has left a mark on my life. To this day, I continue to travel with a heart full of appreciation for the experiences and opportunities provided. The lessons I’ve learned, the people I’ve met, and the places I’ve discovered are treasures I carry with me in my journey through life.
