We recently connected with JaLaura Huff and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JaLaura , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
I’ve developed my ability to take risk by understanding that failure will happen more than usual. Once I’ve stopped underestimating myself I became more confident with handling the pressure that comes with running a business. Although taking risk isn’t always a bad thing, a lot of good can come from it. For instance, new skills, business growth, and it can open up new opportunities.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a candle curator from the DMV area. My business is called ROSIE Candles. I make homemade coconut soy wax candles out of my home. What makes my candles special is that not only is it made with love, but each candle scent I offer I’ve created it myself. When I’m creating my candle scents, I mix different scents to create one so it cannot be duplicated. Currently, I’m focused on building my brand, getting my products into stores, and networking more. In a few weeks, I will be launching a self-care monthly subscription box that will have various of my products inside the box.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three things that were most impactful during my business journey would be having effective communication, business management skills, and networking. My advice for others that are early in their journey would be to know your strengths and try not to focus too much on your weaknesses. Also, it’s very important to know your target when putting out products. Lastly, be patient with yourself and try to perfect your craft because having a product based business will be trail and error along the road.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Normally when I start feeling overwhelmed I notice that I’m trying to do too many things at once and rushing to finish what I’m working on. Some strategies I use when I start to feel overwhelmed is to take an emotional time out, do yoga or meditate, write down things in a journal, read a book, and deep breathing exercises.
