Meet LuAnn Daniel

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LuAnn Daniel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

LuAnn, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
The Summer between my junior and senior year of high school I worked as a radiology aid. I enjoyed it so much I decided to make radiology my career. I spent over three decades working in multiple modalities, including mammography. This is where my passion for breast cancer awareness started. Seeing firsthand young women being diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer is something I would not soon forget. In 2010, I lost a dear friend to breast cancer. Her short, but faithful journey with breast cancer inspired me to find a way to make a difference. A few short weeks after she passed, I was thinking about what a rock she was to so many, and in that moment Women Rock was born as I took the first step forward to create change.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I decided on a career in radiology at a young age and fully expected this to be my only career focus, but God had other plans for me. One moment of inspiration in 2010, led me down another path, using my profession to save and change lives. I never once stopped to think that I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, I just knew it had to be done. Women Rock is a breast cancer nonprofit organization that helps communities face the challenges of breast cancer. Our founding program was providing financial assistance for breast imaging procedures, and breast biopsies. Since then, we have added additional core programs that are all client centered. In the beginning, it was pretty much a family affair, as my family pitched in to help with fundraisers and events. In 2017, Women Rock had grown so much, I made the decision to leave my medical career and put all my efforts into the organization. I never once looked back, and have had zero regrets. I know not everyone is cut out for the emotional aspect of a career that focuses on life and death, but I love what I do!  I am privileged to meet so many women that have amazing strength and courage! It is very heart fulfilling to walk the journey with amazing women as they go through one of the hardest times of their life and come out the other side victorious! But, It’s not always rainbows and unicorns, as much as we would love to save them all, we also feel defeated when we can’t.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’ve always been the caretaker type with a servant’s heart, taking care of others from a young age. Helping my Dad through his own short cancer journey instilled in me a true desire to make the most difficult road easier for others. Without a doubt, my career in Diagnostic Imaging gave me the expertise needed to lead a breast cancer organization. When you are truly doing live-saving work, quitting isn’t an option! In the end, I’ve always followed my heart, and it’s always worked out.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I don’t think you necessarily need to follow the path of what you perceive as your “strengths”. I think it is important to always be open to new things and new ideas. I always tell people to not be afraid to act on an impulse or moment of inspiration. It can lead you to great things! Sometimes, you have to listen to that little voice that is leading you down a different path. You don’t always have to know everything at once. I certainly didn’t know the first thing about running a nonprofit, but I learned as I went, and it has worked out well for me.
