We were lucky to catch up with Melissa V. Rodriguez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa V. , we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity comes from none other than my parents!
I was lucky to grow up in a home filled with boundless love, unwavering support, and endless joy and fun. My parents are incredibly generous individuals, always eager to lend a hand and make a positive impact on people’s lives. They have hearts that know no bounds and they passed on those same values to both my brother and me. From a young age, we were taught the importance of compassion, generosity, and the importance of helping and giving back to others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
For the past 10 years, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work as a Publicist in the entertainment industry. It all started when I interned at several agencies, and a year and a half later, I took the plunge and started my own company called MVR PR.
At MVR PR, we offer a wide range of services that cater to the needs of our clients. From creating interactive experiences to organizing fundraisers, celebrity basketball games, launch parties, single and album release parties, and grand openings; we do it all. We also specialize in exciting PR campaigns for a diverse range of clients, including actors, actresses, reality TV stars, athletes, influencers, and more.
What sets MVR PR apart is our commitment to genuine relationships with our clients. We believe in establishing trust and making our clients feel comfortable throughout the entire process. Our team takes great pride in working together, tackling challenges head-on, and seeing projects through from start to finish. Ultimately, our main goal is to achieve tangible and measurable outcomes for our clients.
So, whether it’s promoting a new film, launching a brand, or organizing a high-profile event, MVR PR is here to make it happen. We have built a reputation as a PR firm that goes above and beyond delivering exceptional results.
Though I’ve been working as a publicist for the past 10 years, what most people don’t know is that I’m also a Licensed Mental Health Therapist and have been practicing in that field for the past 23 years.
My goal is to open my private practice, ForU Therapy, in 2024 and merge it with the entertainment industry. I want to provide services to celebrities, athletes, and anyone working in the entertainment segment.
The mission of ForU Therapy is to inspire hope in each client by creating an atmosphere of trust, authenticity, and empathy. We firmly believe that therapy is beneficial for everyone, regardless of their mental health status, race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
In addition to launching my mental health private practice, another one of my biggest passions is starting a non-profit organization that serves gang members.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my journey, I have found three qualities/skills that have made a significant impact. First, my strong work ethic has been crucial. The entertainment industry can be tough, and success doesn’t come easy. You must be willing to put in the effort and work hard for your opportunities. It’s not just about waiting for things to be handed to you – you must actively contribute and offer something in return.
Second, building genuine relationships has been key. The entertainment industry can be cutthroat, and people often have their own agendas. But if you want to thrive, it’s important to focus on genuine connections. Building authentic relationships based on trust and mutual respect is essential. It’s not about using people to get what you want and then moving on; it’s about forming lasting connections that allow both parties to WIN.
Lastly, being loyal and trustworthy is crucial. If you want others to trust you and collaborate with you, you need to show them that you’re reliable and honest. Demonstrating loyalty, trustworthiness, and a strong work ethic will help you earn the respect and support of others in the industry. These qualities will make people more likely to want to work with you and invest in your success.
Overall, a combination of a strong work ethic, genuine relationships, and being loyal and trustworthy has been invaluable in my journey through the entertainment industry.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities, or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I feel incredibly fortunate to have had several PR mentors who have been working in the entertainment industry for over 25 years. They have played a crucial role in my success and I have learned so much from each of them. They have trusted me with their A List clients, always refer clients to me, provided guidance whenever I needed it, and above all, they have been incredibly supportive since I started my career in public relations.
One of the major hurdles I faced was finding consistent paying clients, effectively marketing my business, and assembling a team of individuals who possess a strong work ethic, loyalty, and trustworthiness. Being an entrepreneur is no easy task, and there are numerous challenges that come with it. However, I am incredibly grateful for my PR circle as they have been instrumental in helping me overcome these obstacles and challenges.
