We were lucky to catch up with Duane Finley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Duane, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
Karma. I like to treat people the way I want to be treated. I still believe I. The golden rule.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My passion has always been to become a business owner in my community. After playing “Slim” in the wood I went to college. My father had a dream of being in business together with my brother and I so I used my financial status at the time to help build that dream. We bought a small business in Los Angeles which was the spring board for me to become an entrepreneur. Being one of few family owned businesses in our community I learned quickly that my education could help to increase the impact we had on our community. Over the years our store front became a gathering spot for the young and the old. We catered to our customer base and it lead to a private mailbox company becoming a community business center. 25 plus years later we are still open for business and growing. The notoriety I get from the film projects I’ve done helps in promoting the business which creates several tangibles which I am able to sell direct to consumers. So your favorite character is also your tax man, notary public, livescan fingerprint provider, mail concierge, business consultant, shipping agent etc…. I even have apparel with the slim character for purchase at the location and on blackBeverlyhills.com
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1 Be determined. Meaning have intention with the things you create and never let anything take you off your path
2 Focus. Stay consistent on the task at hand
3 Learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others. Be your own competition and push yourself.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth and or improvement lately has to be my relationship as a father to my young adult. And to my Lady. I’m humbled daily
