Meet Dwight Thurman

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dwight Thurman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Dwight, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
to help you avoid burnout as a personal trainer:

Set realistic boundaries: It’s essential to set realistic boundaries for your work hours, rest time, and the number of clients you can handle. Make sure you have enough time for yourself and your personal life.
Take breaks: Taking breaks between your training sessions is essential. Use this time to relax, breathe, and refocus your energy.
Most importantly Get enough sleep: Sleep is crucial to maintaining good health, focus, and energy levels.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Communication Skills: Effective communication is essential for building trust and rapport with clients, understanding their needs and goals, and conveying complex fitness concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Adaptability: No two clients are the same, and personal trainers must be able to adapt to each client’s unique needs, abilities, and limitations. Adaptability involves being able to modify workouts, adjust training plans, and make on-the-spot decisions based on changing circumstances.
Business skills: Personal trainers need to have strong business skills to run their own businesses or market themselves effectively as independent trainers. This includes knowledge of marketing, sales, financial management, and client retention strategies.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is anyone who has a goal and wants to put the energy in to reach that goal.
