We recently connected with Frank Musquiz and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Frank, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I like to say purpose found.
When I first moved to Kansas City in 2012, I was set to graduate as a designer from the Art Institute. That did not happen.
Between the years of 2013-2020 I pushed through different trials and tribulations in the areas of mental health, creativity, financial and others. I didn’t know what my purpose was, I just wanted to make money and create. I did just that.
From the years of 2020-2121 I picked up a camera as another creative option. That then lead me to organize a plan to help local businesses grow their business for an affordable price. During that time I managed to not only help a business but create a strong relationship with the business owner leading to the creation of a small market.
Since that time I have been running a the Market for two years now. The market is titled, “Sabados” which means Second Saturday. The market has turned into an artist festival that highlights all artists from painters, to performers, podcasters, vendors and more.
Never thought id be in this position to run an event but its has lead me to some pretty profitable opportunities. Including an activist award, awarded by the Latino Community here in Kansas City.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
With all of the above, Ive been doing this work under the name FK MENACE, wearing a luchador mask gifted by my family who have been in the wrestling business since the late 60s. I am an Activist, DJ, Producer, Photographer, Videographer, Event Organizer and more. I have found my purpose. Be MYSELF.
Im currently working on many curated shows around the Kansas City Area and San Antonio, TX. From Latin events to hip-hop and other creative concepts in the DJ World, I keep busy bringing community together through different creative events such as Sabados and other Vendor markets.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Id say Communication, Mental health, and Consistency.
When I had no direction, I learned that if I wanted to pursure anything I needed to maintain these three areas. If i wanted to lead I needed strong communication. If I wanted to do anything at all with confidence, I needed to maintain a level of peace with myself, wether that was forgiving myself for past mistakes or hitting the gym. Lastly, If i wanted to continue all that ive listed and more moving forward, I needed to stat consistent with everything I took on. Nothing happens overnight, you have to have patience and passion to do what you want to do in this life.
If you need a place to start, find a community that fits you and stick with them. Never stop being a student.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
This is a tough one forsure, for anyone really. My advice would be to take a step back and allow yourself to breathe, feel, disconnect, and have your moment. Mental health is really important to anyone but more so creatives because we struggle with putting ourselves out there starting off and even then we still have our moments
Give yourself that rest day. Do things alone. At the end of the day you got to love yourself correctly and stick with your guns on what you believe in. Sit your ass down if you start to feel overwhelmed and breathe.
