We recently connected with Giovanni Medellin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Giovanni, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
After I graduated from college, I was unsure about what exactly I wanted to do with my life. I worked a year in sales and was running my side-business of graphic designing. Working in sales definitely boosted my confidence when it came to customer engagement and building rapport with clients. It was great while it lasted but I felt I could be doing more now. A friend of mine told me I should become a teacher because my personality was welcoming and my communication skills were great. So I started teaching for Dallas Independent School District, 9th grade Algebra. This is where I found my purpose. Growing up in the same area as these students, I can relate to how they feel about life. Always being discouraged by their environment, they feel that there is no hope for them. I tell them everyday you can do great things in life and if I can do, you can definitely do it. I feel I am where i’m supposed to be at right now in my life. Helping students find their purpose and build the confidence they need for life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My life style is a jack of all trades. I am a high school math teacher, a graphic designer, and a high brass instructor. During the day, I teach algebra to my 9th graders. After school, I work with the trumpets & french horns in the band program that is at the school I work at. I have played trumpet for about 16 years now, so i’m just passing on the art of playing a brass instrument to my band students. In my free time, I still take on clients for my graphic design business “GiographxDesigns” or just make designs for the band program to better recruit and promote for them. Most high school band programs do not have that type of exposure of great looking designs to promote their bands. The designs I make for them make them feel like they are in the big leagues. It gives them a boost of confidence that what they are doing matters. For my business clients, just being able to help someone promote their dreams that they put into their business is a blessing. Everyone wishes for their business to prosper and I just love to help with that goal. Seeing my designs be put to use on clothes, banners, social media, or marketing makes me feel that I am making a difference in somone’s life
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Communication skills was definitely a key factor in my journey. Being able to talk to someone and gain their trust for a business is essential. Confidence when delivering your point can assist you in building that rapport with someone. Creativity is another skill that can help you. Being able to think outside the box and create eye-catching designs that nobody has ever seen before can help build your clientele. Doodling on a paper or listening to music definitely helps me get into that creative flow to design.
Having a self-less mindset is another essential skill that can help. Everything I do is to help those around me. I want to see everyone around me to be successful at their crafts so i’m a big supporter. If you need my help, i’m there! Most people do it for the wrong reasons and turn out to be un-successful. Be someone who wants to see people grow around them and surround yourself by like-minded people.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The person who has been the most helpful in my journey would be my girlfriend, Barbara. I show her all of my designs before I send them to the client and ask for her opinion. She will always be 100% transparent with me and tell me if the design is good or if it can be better. She is definitely my rock when it comes to support. She has always believed in me in all my dreams and aspirations. Just to have that kind of support system is a gem.
