Meet Chevvy Cheung

We were lucky to catch up with Chevvy Cheung recently and have shared our conversation below.

Chevvy, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Optimism for me comes from discipline and having been able to persevere through difficult situations. The discipline aspect is reflected in establishing daily goals, (and reaching those goals) whether it be exercise (daily), reaching 10, 000 steps per day, martial arts, coming through for my children, reading (5-6x/week) and continued learning to improve myself professionally and personally. The perseverance is having encountered challenging situations such as loss of employment a few years ago (feeling the angst and shock) to then having built a private practice where I am able to earn enough to care for my family and make people’s live better through my practice.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I practice as a Relationship and Life Coach/Therapist primarily working with couples, parents and individuals to improve how they function in their most meaningful relationships. What excites me most is helping my clients identify the dysfunctional aspects of how they experience relationships, then supporting them in identifying unmet emotional/psychological/relationship needs/heal from trauma and begin to communicate in healthy ways how to get their own needs met while also attending to the needs of their loved ones. In terms of my approach, I have taken to the teachings of some of the more influential minds in the field of relationships, trauma, mental health, parenting, neuroscience, psychology, to continually increase my understanding of what makes us humans feel safe, heard, connected to others and ultimately thrive in personal and professional milieu. .

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important qualities that I deem to be most impactful are: 1) openness to learning coupled with acknowledging I know so little about anything; 2) discipline and; 3) working hard but balancing work with being present and available to my children and family.

How would you describe your ideal client?
Ideal clients are those who have made the commitment to “show-up” and “do the work”. I don’t have an ideal demographic or personality characteristic in mind when starting new professional relationships, just people who have a willingness to change the patterns that have led to disruptions in their relationships.
