Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marsais Urban. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marsais, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I think the best way to answer this is that I really do thrive on creating new adventures. I really love trying new things, adapting to new interests and indulging in new adventures that come my way by following my heart. Basically, I’m an adult with ADHD and well, I embrace it as my superpower. When I hit a roadblock creatively and still have a passion for whatever it is, I find it best to do something thats outside my realm of normal for that activity. Let me give you an example so I make more sense 😉 In photography a creative ruts for me meant I should take up learning a new skill or when I went on to start shooting film. When another rut would happen and I felt stuck, spending time challenging that activity through painting or capturing things through my lens that I wasn’t normally capturing and doing it in a new and different way, helped me break the rut.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
First and foremost, I’m a mother to four incredible boys ages 12 to 1. The best way I can describe what I do aside from keeping the boys alive, our house half put together and regular wife and mom stuff, is a creative entrepreneur 😉 As a business, I’m a photographer and content creator. I’ve been photographing professionally for over 11 years and through the ebbs and flows of the industry and specialities, it is still one of my great loves. I was a fashion merchandising and business administration major in college so I would say my first love has always been both fashion and business. I regularly style my photography clients (and friends!) and really love helping small businesses on the side with marketing and branding. I naturally got into content creating as it felt like as I share the things I love I know those I am sharing with know I will always give my honest (and sometimes humorous) opinions to anything I create or share because I believe so strongly in it. I genuinely love creating whatever I can, whether its through photographs or styling or helping a business. Heck I don’t have four children by accident…. 😛
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As I previously mentioned, I majored in fashion and business and I have a love for both. Lucky for me, being a creative owning your own business also meant, I needed to know about business. Not only did I utilize the knowledge I had prior to ever starting my own business, but I was determined to work for myself which meant, anything I didn’t know, I better learn. Thankfully, I learned to read at some point in my life so I filled myself with photography books, business books, forums, online classes, etc. to learn what I needed to in order to help make this little dream of mine a reality. I think the best advice I can give anyone starting off is be hungry. Not like, oh my gosh gimme that cheeseburger although that sounds amazing at all times, but be hungry (relentless) for whatever it is your pursuing. I was not the girl growing up who always had a camera in her hand or thought I would pursue photography, I just was so intrigued by it, fell in love with photographs and was hell bent on making it happen. So, be hungry, stay hungry (or pivot) and continually educate yourself. There is always more to learn, room to grow and ways to adapt. Is that 3 things yet? 😉
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for folks to partner with! 😉 For starters can you find me someone who can come over say 3 days a week with an iced coffee in hand and help me plan out all the ideas constantly swirling in my head? We shall call them a master executor? 😉 On a serious note in case that’s not a thing, I love collaborating with companies and local businesses on the content creating side of my business to help bring awareness to the brand or restaurant, etc. if its something that makes my heart light up. I hate to say it but one of the hardest things I’ve had to do is say no to brands, companies etc, because it’s just not something that I vibe with or align with my goals. Building an audience who trusts me is vital to me, so I can’t just say yes to anything. However, if you’re looking to benefit from a combined photography/content creating aspect and bring awareness to your business and want to partner/collaborate I would love to hear from you!
