We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexander Jacobson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexander, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
For the longest time, I had no idea what my purpose was. As a kid I never really knew what I wanted to do with my life. Other kids would say they wanted to be a firefighter or a doctor, I didn’t ever have an answer. When I was signing up for elective classes in high school, I remember picking the language courses. German, Spanish, French… well I ended up in a class called TV & Broadcast Media (not at all what I had signed up for). That class and that teacher changed my life. I fell in love with video immediately. Mr. Kaufman, my teacher, was the perfect catalyst to push me toward my new passion. As I’ve been in the industry I’ve done many jobs, and have been refining my purpose. Now, I find myself leaning into organization and making connections. I like to put the right person on set for the job, and connecting clients to the right talent. Astro has become an agency; not just a production company. It’s quite the future we’re heading towards. I’m very excited for what’s next.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We help brands elevate their image with video strategy. A brand’s perception is everything online. Consumers make an assumption (and ultimately a decision) about you in a fraction of a second. We specialize in refining and crafting that image to cater to a brand’s target market and goals.
I feel like a lot of “video people” just shoot and edit; it doesn’t feel intentional or like there’s a real purpose. The goal has always been to create things that are effective and truly going to help the brand we’re working with.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three things I’d say that are the most impactful on my journey are adaptability, willingness to learn, and the ability to implement new ideas quickly.
Escaping the rigidity of your education is a tough task. Many people assume that once they’ve learned something, the way that they’ve learned is the “only right way” to do something. That’s not the case. In our industry, things change so rapidly that if you don’t adapt, you’ll fall behind. I’m constantly learning about new methods, tools, and ideologies. Especially with AI tools, if we’re unwilling to try them out or learn how to use them, eventually, we’ll be outdated. Staying and the cutting-edge and maintaining a future-focused mindset has kept Astro Creative around for nearly a decade.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Currently, Astro Creative is looking to partner with videographers, editors, video production companies, social media managers, and advertising agencies to facilitate more services for our clients. The best way to grow is to grow together, and we want to help provide opportunities to our network and community.
