We were lucky to catch up with Deidre Daniels recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Deidre, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence and self-esteem developed from a history of rejection. Most people view rejection as a negative, but I’ve always used it as a tool of motivation. At 13 years old I was told I wasn’t good enough by a middle school teacher. She said I reminded her of a child that had no future and she felt sorry for me. At that age a fire was lit. Being told I am not enough presented an opportunity of self-reflection, 18 years later and I’m sitting with the same fire. If I’m asked to get something done, I get it done. If I’m told it’s impossible, I prove why it is. The rejection pushes me to results and those results build my confidence to keep getting it done.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Deidre Daniels and I’m the founder and CEO of Reliance Medical Management, LLC. I have over 12 years of combined clinical and administrative experience and have had the opportunity to work with different providers, specialties, and hospitals. My passion started in nursing and grew into administrative management. Within this transition, my motivation began with helping providers stay in business and focus on their patient care. Healthcare revenue cycle management begins when a patient makes an appointment to seek medical services. The process ends when organizations have collected all claims and patient payments. However, the life of a patient’s account is not as straightforward as it seems. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Responsibility, Drive, and Care. In any business, the owner has to hold a level of responsibility whether it is good or bad. If something goes wrong – I am responsible for it, if something goes right – I am responsible for it. This sets you apart from the norm, whether that is in work or personal. My drive keeps me going. Things are not always great, but you have to remain driven even when things seem to look bad. Last, you have to care about what you do and the people you do it for.
The advice I give to others would be to keep going. You will not know if things will work if you tap out. Once the idea is in your mind, you just have to plant and keep watering. Leaves die, pluck them off, and keep watering. Eventually your plant will thrive, and you’ll be on your way.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
When you work for yourself, there is no one there to tell you when to clock out. Over the years I worked 12–16-hour days which caused burn out very quickly. I had to learn when and how to clock out. Giving myself a break was one of the most important things I neglected to do. I’ve grown to understand self-care and mental breaks are just as important in sustaining your business. If you are exhausted it will show in your work.
