Meet Isea

We were lucky to catch up with Isea recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Isea, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience stems from the incredible example set by my mom. She’s been the cornerstone of my inspiration, demonstrating unwavering determination and resilience in the face of challenges. Witnessing her relentless work ethic and enduring spirit has instilled in me a deep-rooted sense of resilience. I’ve had my share of getting knocked down and having to pick myself back up. I’ve had my moments of discomfort. However, I’m a big believer in growth calls for discomfort. Change calls for uncertainty. Learning how to manage and come out on the other end is the true test of resilience. My Mom taught me how to hustle harder than anyone and everyone around me. That influence has undoubtedly shaped my approach to life and music, teaching me the value of resilience in achieving my goals.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been on a journey with my music since the age of 12, starting with poetry and eventually weaving melodies with the strum of a guitar. Today, I craft music that I not only perform live in the vibrant heartbeat of NYC but also use as a platform for storytelling. For me, it’s all about connecting with people through narratives that resonate deep within.

My brand? It’s all about confidence, empowerment, knowing your worth, and not being afraid to speak the truth. I delve into songwriting fearlessly, articulating the unspoken thoughts and emotions that many hesitate to voice aloud.

This year, I had the electrifying opportunity to open for Doechii and Earl Sweatshirt at Terminal 5 in February, performing in front of 4,000 people. It was an unforgettable experience! Additionally, my music found its way onto Spotify’s prestigious Rap Caviar playlist, courtesy of the talented actress Dominique Fishback.

One of the highlights was the re-release of ‘Bare Minimum,’ accompanied by my very first music video! And there’s more on the horizon—I’m gearing up to drop another single by the end of this year and have exciting mini-projects lined up for early 2024.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most? What advice would you give to those who are just starting out?
Resilience has been the backbone of my journey. The ability to bounce back from setbacks, rejections, and challenges has been crucial. To those starting out: embrace setbacks as learning opportunities. Every hurdle is a chance to grow stronger. Keep pushing forward, knowing that resilience is often the key to breakthroughs. Authenticity, staying true to myself and my own sound has been instrumental. It’s essential to carve your own path and not be swayed by trends or others’ expectations. My advice: don’t be afraid to express your truth. Your authenticity is your superpower. Embrace it fully and let it shine through in your work. Lastly, I would say continuous learning is a major factor. The music industry is ever-evolving. Being open to learning new techniques, exploring different styles, and understanding the business side of music has been important for myself. Early on, immerse yourself in learning. Be a sponge—absorb everything you can about your craft and the industry. Stay curious and adaptable.

For those starting their journey: my advice is experiment, explore, and discover what truly resonates with you. Your uniqueness is your strength. Find your voice! Challenges aren’t roadblocks but opportunities for growth. Don’t let setbacks discourage you; use them as stepping stones. Stay resilient! Perseverance is key. There will be tough moments, but remember, they are temporary. Keep your eyes on your goals. Ultimately, it’s about the journey. Embrace every experience, learn from it, and keep it pushin’ with passion.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Over the past 12 months, my most significant area of growth has been in my stage presence and performance. I’ve dedicated myself to refining my live performances, working on my confidence on stage, and connecting more deeply with my audience. There was definitely a learning curve to it all also. I used to play a small street corner where the pizza shop owners next door were the only people watching and cheering me on, and slowly a few more elderly people would come and take a seat and listen. I also realized after performing at Terminal 5, whether it’s 4,000 or 40 people in a room, I want to really get my message, and my emotions across. It’s a sense of personal growth and confidence that had genuinely allowed me this improvement over the last 12 months.
