We were lucky to catch up with Erika Carrillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erika, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Honestly, I’m not sure if I have. One week I’m dancing in my office because I delivered a beautiful gallery, and the next I’m struggling with my self-confidence. When you have clients who appreciate your unique style, it gives you a boost. But when you deliver a gallery and don’t hear anything back… Your heart breaks just a little. It’s hard not to compare myself with super-successful photographers. But when I stop comparing and start creating I feel alive. Just know artists all have unique backgrounds. Your works are not supposed to be like everyone else’s stop trying to be an imposter. You will only get noticed if you believe in yourself.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?.
My passion for photography has only grown over the years. I’ve been a successful graphic designer for more than two decades, working with a variety of businesses, from art galleries, and advertising agencies to broadcast networks. Beautiful imagery has always been an important element of my work, so I decided to evolve and make it my focus, finding a new niche to thrive in.
I’ve been lucky enough to live in vibrant cities that have always inspired me to keep creating and continue pursuing my artistic purpose.
I’m always seeking new opportunities to partner with companies, artists, and other creatives to create beautiful, unique photographs that evoke emotion and tell a story.
I’m excited to see what new projects come my way and to continue my path in photography.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I Just always make sure to network with other photographers to trade tips and tricks with. Collaborating with others is a great way to learn and stay inspired. I’ve made some amazing connections with other creatives.
Overall, the key to succeeding in art and photography is to never stop learning and practicing. Don’t get too comfortable or boastful. Constantly honing in on your craft is the only way to stay ahead of the game.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I would love to have more opportunities in advertising photography. To be able to team up with businesses to create beautiful, distinctive photographs that serve a purpose.
