We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Loren Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Loren, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
If I’m honest, my purpose has always been present, even evident. What took me years and is still a work in progress is separating myself from what others’ view of my purpose is. I’ve had YEARS of folks telling me inside and outside of my industry “THIS is who you are.” I’ve learned someone else’s version of me is none of my business, nor my concern. I had to get quiet. Be still. Think. and Listen. What have my biggest passions always been? What do i feel the happiest doing? What is a way I can use these things and leave this world better than i found it? So to you the reader, What is your answer?
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a pastor’s kid from the Bay Area. I come from an insanely huge and gifted musical family, and I’ve been singing since the age of 3, professionally since 13. I believe in the power of words. The power of intention. The power of something coming from the heart and going to the heart. That is the reason, the impact and the purpose of who I am and what I sing about. I’ve been blessed to work with a lot of wonderful artists over the years, Heather Headley, Deborah Cox, Andy Grammer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, BTS, Andy Grammer, and Michael Buble to name a few, I’ve also worked professionally in theatre and in vocal ensembles and duos, but there’s a special place in my heart for what I do as a solo artist. Ive worked so hard to stand in my own power as an artist, and i do believe i’m reaping those benefits now.
I’m most excited about my first ever Holiday Concert In Downtown Los Angeles, Tuesday November 28th. Myself and my 7 piece band are working around the clock to make this an unforgettable evening with truly something special for everyone. You’ll recognize some holiday classics, some of my music from my EP “Christmas from my heart to yours” as well as some surprises……..Don’t miss this night. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Know who you are. Know why.
Know for whom.
Everything else is a subcategory of the above three truths.
Unfortunately today’s artist has to do much more then just sing well. I learned to be honest, to ask for what I want. I learned to dream big and to make a path when i can’t follow someone else’s. I learned that I’m unique and that’s not a bad thing. I never stop learning. I constantly am striving to be my best as an artist. I learned to surround myself with folks that love me for me who will always tell me the truth, even when i don’t want to hear it, and I learned that sometimes it’s okay to ignore even those that tell me the truth because their truth is not mine to claim. It all goes back to those three statements.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Sometimes as a singer, the thing i love the most (singing) is the thing i do the least, because i”m spread pretty thin with all the other aspects of what I do. I’m in urgent need of a visionary who has a boutique PR agency.
I’m also in need of someone who can handle personal assistance duties, and someone who can handle social media. If that’s you, please reach out to me here through this platform or through any of my social media- @sanglorensmith.
