We were lucky to catch up with Jon Rubio recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jon, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being confident and comfortable in your own skin is essential for becoming successful in anything. It took me a while to learn my culture and roots over time I learned to embrace who I was and use my differences to overcome political struggles in my career. I am Native Mexican (indigenous). And as an indigenous person a lot of what I’ve went through was being different in lots of circles and spaces but because I embraced my roots I was able to use my uniqueness as a way to market myself in a different way than others in my industry. Effectiveness comes from knowing who you are and expressing that in your imagery, music and branding. This to me is the most efficient way to become successful knowing you are different. Embrace your differences, uniqueness, and be proud of where you come from.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a music artist from Denver Colorado. I was born and raised in Denver but a descendant of Mexican Native Tribes and indigenous peoples. My primary focus is on creating my own expression in the Hip Hop/Rap genre. I use my heritage as well as eclectic taste in music to create my own style of Hip Hop as I like to say. A lot of Latinos or Spanish speaking artists of hip hop in the states do not represent their culture as much as we should in the Hip Hop industry and I am changing that. I think our people do not get represented enough in the industry and now that there’s somewhat of a void in Hip Hop this is a perfect opportunity to showcase what I’ve been working on. I am currently working on my first full length album and will be releasing more music as the next few months arrive. Please stay tuned and make sure to follow my social media pages if your interested in hearing Hip Hop like you’ve never heard it before!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Thinking back now 3 qualities that were most impactful in my journey so far are perseverance, consistency, and kindness. These three have influenced my self as a person on how to carry myself as well as my music content. When your coming up it’s important that you understand it’s going to be a tough road ahead with lots of competition. It’s easy to get discouraged but you have to persevere through the struggles. Now perseverance is one thing, being consistent is another. If you are consistently working on your business you will always be learning new skills and attaining more knowledge you need to build your business up from scratch. Consistency is key to working in a timely manner. We think we have time. We don’t. That clock is ticking and we aren’t getting any you get. So start now and stay at it! Last, is kindness. No one wants to work with a grouch and elitist. Be kind enough to network with and smart enough not to get taken advantage of. Make sure you check your ego. It’s okay to be self confident but also know that you are only human and your not better than anyone else. Get over yourself. What matters most is the communities and people you will impact with your business and art rather than what this career does for you. If your why is strong enough to power you how you will find a way but only if your heart is in the right place! Read lots, learn business and be authentic (yourself)!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
If your looking for potential business partner or to collaborate I am definitely open to working with whoever is passionate about art and has a visionary mindset when it comes to business. I’m a solo artist I do everything myself from booking, to recording, writing, performing, social media, marketing and releasing music. Not to mention videography as well. However I am looking for potential investors. People who can see the vision I have for what I want to do with my brand and get to the next level with me. If your an artist as well let’s work on some music, create social media content and also network. Feel free to reach out to me on my social media if you want to get in touch.
