We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shane Alexander. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shane below.
Hi Shane, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
Self-care is one of the most important things to NOT skip out on with anything you do in life. If you are not healthy, physically, emotionally, and mentally then you are just making things that much harder on yourself. Things that I like to focus on when it comes to self-care is exercising. I feel that being physically active and working out is one of the best things you can do for not only your physical well-being but also your mental well-being, and honestly emotional well-being, it’s kind of like a one-stop shop! get out there and run! or swim or cycle, get to the gym and get some lifting in, or do some yoga and pilates! it’s all good for you and the more you do it the better you feel all around.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a professional stunt performer here in Southern California, and I absolutely love my job! I feel like there’s never a dull moment, even when there is one! I love the ability to help bring a story to life on film and am grateful when I can play a part in that vision in its journey! I am also the co-founder of the Southern California Stunt Screw. We are based in San Diego but travel everywhere for work, we actually have one of our teammates working in Mexico right now for five weeks and we are insanely proud of him! We are also very happy to announce that we have begun working on our own in-house productions this year, I can’t say too much yet, but expect lots of action of course! We are very excited to be taking this next step in the industry and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would have to say work ethic is the top quality I have that has gotten me this far, after that I would say resilience, to just keep getting up and going for it. The last one which I feel may be odd but common sense is something I feel gets overlooked. The best advice I think I could offer to anyone is to honestly never give up. The journey will get hard sometimes, it’s inevitable, but you can’t let that beat you. Keep your head up high and keep working toward your goal!
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The best thing I think my parents did that really helped, was to not baby me. I had to earn what I wanted, I was expected to work and not be handed things. They instilled a strong work ethic and taught me to always help those that need it. That is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life and I hope to pass it down to my kids if I ever have any.
